CHESTERTOWN, Md – Junior guard Joy Sanders scored eight of her career-high 16 points in overtime to help lead the host Washington College Shorewomen to a thrilling, 71-66, double-overtime victory against the McDaniel Green Terror Wednesday evening at Penny J. Fall Gym. The Shorewomen have won five straight and improve to 11-3 (7-2) while the visitors fall to 3-12 (1-9).
How It Happened
- Washington trailed 9-8 late in the opening quarter, however, sophomore center Serena Pluta made a pair of free throws and converted a layup to give the hosts a 12-9 edge heading into the second period. The points' ignited an 11-0 run that extended into the second quarter.
- Junior guard Andrea Prestianne opened the stanza with a triple, Pluta made a layup, and senior guard Madeline Williams hit a layup to spot the Shorewomen a 19-9 lead at the 7:28 mark.
- The Green Terror responded with an 8-0 spurt of their own to trim the deficit to 19-17 with 5:40 left in the half. Junior guard Josey Klingenberg and freshman guard Liliana Overcash both connected from deep during the stretch.
- The Shorewomen still held a 23-20 advantage after freshman guard Karry Kelliher's jumper in the paint, but the visitors scored eight of the final ten points to grab a 28-25 lead at intermission.
- McDaniel upped their lead to 33-25 at the 8:40 mark of the third quarter but the hosts scored six straight to trim the deficit to 33-31 after another layup by Kelliher with 5:07 left.
- The Green Terror widened their lead to 44-33 with fifty-four second left in the quarter, their largest lead of the night. Senior forward Meggie Burgess scored five points during an 11-2 stretch. The visitors settled for a 44-36 lead at the end of the quarter as senior guard Crystal Jones swished a trey to close out the scoring.
- Trailing 46-36 second into the final stanza, the Shorewomen rattled off nine consecutive points to get right back into the contest. Pluta hit a trey from the right-wing and then finished a conventional three-point play to make it 46-42 at the 7:13 mark. Kelliher then hit one of two from the line and Sanders followed with a jumper to cap the run with 4:30 left to play in regulation.
- Klingenberg stopped the run with a triple to make it 49-45 before Pluta hit two from the stripe to make it 49-47 at the 3:57 mark.
- Junior forward Mallory Conroy hit a jumper to extend McDaniel's lead to 51-47 but junior forward Lizzie Hudock converted a layup and Prestianne made two clutch free throws to tie the game at 51-51 with just under two minutes left.
- Neither team was able to score down the stretch as the game went into overtime.
- The hosts led 59-58 in the first overtime after Pluta made a layup with just under a minute left. Burgess answered with a layup and sophomore guard Katie Klein made one of two from the line to give the visitors a 61-59 edge with fourteen ticks left.
- Sanders was then fouled with just under seven seconds left and went to the line. She misfired on her first attempt and then purposely missed the second shot intentionally. The ball ricochet off the front of the iron and right back to Sanders, who then tied the game with a layup to force a second overtime.
- Neither team managed to score in the final period until Pluta scored inside off a feed from Prestianne with 2:12 left. Sanders then stole the inbounds pass and converted a layup to extend the lead to 65-61.
- The visitors were within 67-64 with fifty-one seconds left but Prestianne delivered a pair of free throws to widen the lead to 69-64 with forty-nine ticks remaining.
- Burgess followed with a jumper but Sanders put the game out of reach with two big free throws to seal the win with just fifteen second left.
For the Shorewomen
- Pluta made 8-of-12 field goals, hit all five of her free throws and grabbed seven boards in 33 minutes of action.
- Sanders was 7-of-10 from the floor and also grabbed seven boards in 18 minutes off the bench.
- Jones tied for the game-high with 10 boards.
- Williams recorded seven rebounds, five assists and a team-best four steals.
- Washington shot 36.1 percent overall (26-of-72), were 3-for-17 (17.6 percent) from beyond the arc and made 16-of-23 (69.6 percent) of their freebies.
For the Green Terror
- Conroy went 8-of-14 and finished with a team-high 18 points in 45 minutes.
- Klingenberg contributed 15 points and a game-high five steals in 44 minutes.
- Klein and Burgess each added 12 points. Burgess also grabbed a team-high 10 boards to finish with a double-double.
- McDaniel went 24-for-70 (34.3 percent) from the floor, made 7-of-27 attempts from distance, and converted 11-of-15 (73.3 percent) of their free throws.
Notes
- The Shorewomen outscored McDaniel by a 38-16 margin in the paint.
- Washington outboarded the Green Terror by a 56-42 margin and grabbed 16 offensive boards.
- The Shorewomen are 3-0 in overtime this season.
- The five-game winning streak is their first since the 2011-12 season when they captured six straight.
