Bears Rally From Early Deficit to Top Shorewomen in CC Tournament, 5-2

Esposito Ties Program Record for Goals in a Season

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Host Ursinus overcame a 2-0 deficit after the first quarter by scoring the next five goals unanswered on its way to a 5-2 win over visiting Washington College in the first round of the Centennial Conference Field Hockey Tournament on Tuesday night at Snell Field Hockey Field.  For Washington, sophomore forward Kat Esposito (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) tied the Washington record for goals in a single season with 18.  The fourth seeded Bears improve to 10-8 on the season, while the fifth seeded Shorewomen conclude their season at 9-9.  Ursinus moves on to play top seeded #4 Johns Hopkins on Thursday evening in the semifinal round.

How It Happened
- Ursinus took the first three shots of the game but could not put any on target.
- The Shorewomen were awarded a penalty corner with 5:22 left in the first quarter and off of a rebound of the first shot off the corner, Esposito got the rebound and whacked it into the goal from the right side.
- Washington would push its lead to 2-0 with 1:51 remaining in the first as Anna Harrington's pass from 40 yards out found Esposito, who got behind the defense, and was able to slip a shot past Bear goalie Jordan Ulsh through the five hole.  With the goal Esposito tied Laura Scimeca '05 for goals in a single season at 18.   The Shorewomen would lead 2-0 after one.
- The Bears would cut the lead in half with 4:11 to go in the second quarter as Lauren Breisch got the rebound at the left post and tucked in into the cage.
- Washington had a chance to restore its two-goal lead in the final minute of the first half, but Ursinus goalie Jordan Ulsh stopped Esposito and Julianna Sterling shots to keep it a one-goal game entering halftime.
- Jordan Moore would tie the game 2:58 into the third quarter as her shot from the top of the circle found the left side of the cage off a penalty corner with Breisch and Sarah Symes picking up the assists.
- Moore would put Ursinus ahead, 3-2, just 79 seconds later as she gathered the loose ball and chipped it over WC's Ava Rivera with 10:23 remaining in the third.  The hosts would take a one-goal lead heading into the fourth.
- In the fourth, Moore passed to the ball to Mary Lauren Franz, whose shot from near the end line on the right side found its way into the goal to give Ursinus a 4-2 edge with 11:13 left.
- The Bears extended their lead to 5-2 when Ellie Bruggeman redirected a feed from Lauren Weaver from the middle of the circle with 5:35 left to round out the scoring.

For The Shorewomen (9-9)
- Scorer: Esposito (two goals), Harrington (assist)
- Goalkeeper: Rivera (13 saves, 5 goals allowed, 60:00)
- Washington had nine shots and four penalty corners in the contest.

For Ursinus (10-8)
- Scorers: Moore (two goals), Breisch (goal and assist), Franz (goal), Bruggeman (goal), Symes (assist), Weaver (assist)
- Goalkeeper: Ulsh (4 saves, 2 goal allowed, 60:00)
- The Bears had 29 shots and 14 penalty corners in the game.

Notes
- Scimeca scored 18 times in both the 2002 and 2003 seasons.
- Washington was participating in its 11th Centennial Conference Tournament and the first since 2017.
- Seven seniors represented WC for the final time tonight: Harrington, Jillian Brejnik, Kyra Heap, Jo Robson, Tatum Schatt, Julianna Sterling and Marah Vain-Callahan.
