#19 Blue Jays End Shoremen’s Quest for Repeat in Centennial Semifinal, 1-0

Anthony Pinto Makes Four Saves for Washington

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting #19 Johns Hopkins' Ian Whamond scored the only goal of the game on a penalty kick with 14:56 remaining in the second half in a 1-0 win over host and reigning Centennial Conference Champion Washington College on Friday night on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium in a Centennial Conference Men's Soccer Tournament semifinal game.  The third seeded Blue Jays improve to 12-1-6 overall and advance to Sunday's final against Muhlenberg, while the second seeded Shoremen, who had their run at a repeat come to an end, conclude their season at 7-5-6.

How It Happened
- The Blue Jays had the game's first shot 2:02 into the game by Tyler White, but Anthony Pinto stopped it. 
- Washington's best chance and only shot on goal in the contest was in the 18th minute on a header from Alex Coster from about eight yards out, but Johns Hopkins goalie Alex Morgret was able to tip the shot over the crossbar.
- Jackson Shapiro of the Blue Jays had the final shot in the first half with 54 ticks left, but Anthony Pinto turned it away.
- In the second half, the first shot on target was by the Blue Jays' Giulian Laudisa, but it was stopped by Anthony Pinto in the 65th minute.
-With 14:56 left in the game, Ian Whamond was tripped in the box by a Washington defender and Hopkins was award a penalty kick.  Whamond placed his shot into the left side of the goal to put the guests ahead.
- Axel Whamond almost put the Blue Jays ahead 2-0 with 7:16 to go in the game, but the Shoremen's Ryan Sharpley was there to stop the shot from going in for a team save and keep it a 1-0 game.
- Harrison Malone had WC's last chance with 5:40 remaining in the game, but his shot sailed high.  It would be the last shot of the game for either team.

- Goalkeeper: Anthony Pinto (4 saves, 1 goal allowed, 90:00)
- Team save was by Sharpley.
- Washington had three shots and took four corner kicks in the contest.

For #19 Johns Hopkins (12-1-6)
- Scoring: Ian Whamond (goal)
- Goalkeeper: Morgret (1 save, 0 goals allowed, 90:00)
- The Blue Jays took 15 shots in the contest and had four corners.

Notes
- It was the first ever meeting between the Shoremen and Blue Jays in the Centennial Conference Tournament and a matchup of the past two champions with Washington winning it all last season and Johns Hopkins capturing the crown in 2019.  There was no tournament in 2020 due to COVID.
- WC was competing in its third conference tournament.  In addition to last year and this season, the Shoremen qualified in 2016.
- The Shoremen had their seven-match unbeaten streak come to an end as the squad went 4-0-3 during the stretch.
- In the other semifinal, visiting fifth seeded Muhlenberg downed host top seed and #7 Franklin & Marshall, 2-0, in Lancaster, Pa.
- Three Shoremen represented the team for the final time tonight: Eric Gwadz, Tim Loeffler and Alyan Youssaf.  The trio was part of the 2021 conference title squad that reached the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament.
