Shoremen Hold Off Gophers for First Win, 82-80

Corrao Ties His Career-High with Game-Topping 27 Points

TOWSON, Md. – Visiting Washington College got a game-best 27 points from junior forward Sam Corrao (Salford, Pa./Perkiomen School) and fended off a late comeback attempt, including a game-winning three-point try on the last shot of the game, from host Goucher to pick up an 82-80 win over on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference men's basketball game at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.  The Shoremen improve to 1-6 on the season, while the Gophers drop to 2-7.

How It Happened
- Trailing 6-5 with 16:25 in the first half after a lay-in by Goucher's Darrell Green, Washington went on an 8-0 run to take a 13-6 lead with 13:56 to go in the first on a Kedrick Frink layup.
- The Shoremen took their first double-digit lead of the game, 18-8, with 12:47 remaining in the first on a Grant Kemp lay-in.
- Washington would extend its lead to 17 points with 48 seconds left in the first half on a Corrao layup and led 47-33 at halftime.
- In the second half, WC would push the advantage to 20 on two occasions, the second time coming with 16:20 left on a Frink lay-in.
- The Shoremen led 70-53 with 8:46 remaining in the contest after a Kemp layup, the Gophers scored eight straight points to trim the lead to 70-61 with 6:15 to go on a Green bucket.
- Trailing 79-67 with 2:18 to go after a Frink hoop, the Gophers would score the next eight points to cut the guests' lead to 79-75 with 43 seconds left on two John Dixon free throws.
- Jason Zielinski would can one free throw with 33 ticks left to make it 80-75 before Devin Brackenridge made a jumper to trim the deficit to three, 80-77, with 15 seconds left.
- After Nick Romeo netted a free throw with 12.2 seconds left, Josh Lichti would score on a traditional three-point play to cut the 12-point lead down to one with 6.9 ticks remaining.
- Frink was fouled with 3.3 seconds to go and made one from the line to make it 82-80.
- Green had a chance to win it for Goucher with a three-point try with two seconds left, but it was off the mark and the Shoremen got the win.

For The Shoremen (1-6)
- Corrao (27 points, 9-for-13 from the floor), Kemp (15 points and seven rebounds), Frink (13 points and six assists), Zielinski (12 points)
- The Shoremen shot 48% (28-for-58) from the floor, 42% (14-for-34) from three-point range and 55% (12-for-22) from the foul line. 
- Washington outscored the Gophers in second chance points (16-7) and held a 37-33 edge on the boards.
- The Shoremen had 13 turnovers.

For Goucher (2-7)
- Jacob Morgan (26 points, five steals and four assists), Green (18 points and eight rebounds), Dixon (12 points)  
- The Gophers shot 49% (31-for-63) from the field, 33% (4-for-12) from three and 64% (14-for-22) from the free throw line.    
- Goucher outscored WC in points in the paint (50-28), bench points (25-21) and transition points (19-4).
- The Gophers had 10 turnovers in the contest.

Notes
- Corrao matched his career-high in points this afternoon as he scored 27 versus Muhlenberg in the season finale this past February.
- The 48% from the floor was a season-best for WC.
- Both teams scored 13 points off turnovers in the game.
- Washington leads the all-time series with Goucher, 8-0.
