CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Washington College field hockey team dominated visiting Virginia Wesleyan, 5-0, Saturday afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
The Shorewomen, who did not allow the Marlins (0-2) a shot on goal until the final minutes of the contest, led 2-0 at the break and received goals from five different players.
How It Happened
-A pair of freshmen midfielders,
Jules Weglarz (Bear, Del., Appoquinimink) and
Kendal Thomson (Catonsville, Md., Mount de Sales Academy) hooked up on the game-winner with just four seconds left in the opening quarter. Thomson put in her first career marker from point-blank range after Weglarz managed to deflect a loose ball over to her in front of the cage.
-The Maroon & Black struck again at the 19:30 mark of the second quarter as sophomore forward
Kat Esposito (Severna Park, Md., Severna Park) took a feed from freshman forward
Aly Campbell (Huntingdon Valley, Pa., Abington) and beat Virginia Wesleyan goalie Emma Wehr.
-The hosts scored their first goal of the second half as Esposito set up junior midfielder
Jillian Brejnik (Virginia Beach, Va., Frank W. Cox) at the 32:43 mark.
-Freshman midfielder
Samantha McMahon (Bear, Del., Appoquinimink) extended the lead to 4-0 with an unassisted tally with 5:13 left in the contest.
-Yet another freshman, midfielder
MaryCate Anson (Newark, Del., Newark Charter), closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 56:44 mark.
