Morrall Reaches 100 All-Time Draws as Shorewomen Bedevil Devils in Season Opening 17-4 Win

Senior Becomes 13th Shorewoman to Win 100 Career Draws and Scores Game-High Five Goals

MADISON, N.J. – Visiting Washington College scored the game's first seven games and led 13-3 at halftime on its way to a 17-4 win over host Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham in a non-conference women's lacrosse game on Wednesday evening at Robert T. Shields Field.  In the win, senior midfielder Ellie Morrall (Contoocook, N.H./Hopkinton) became the 13th Shorewomen Lacrosse player to reach 100 career draw controls as she tied for tops in the game.  It was the season opener for both the Shorewomen and Devils.

How It Happened
- Anna Wilson scored on her first collegiate shot 73 seconds into the game to put Washington ahead 1-0.  30 seconds later, Wilson would notch her first assist of her college career on an Abby Laubach goal.  The sequence started on a draw control by Morrall for her 100th career draw.
- Morrall would make it 3-0 as she finished a pass from Morgan Sutherland with 12:04 left in the opening quarter.
- Wilson netted a free position goal with 9:15 left in the first to make it 4-0 before Laubach made it 5-0 with 7:41 remaining on a pass from Ashley Devlin.
- Sutherland pushed the lead to 6-0 with 2:11 to go in the quarter and 1:01 later Morrall gave the Shorewomen a 7-0 advantage.
- The Devils got onto the board with 35 seconds left in the first on a Claudia Zappa score from Julianna Medina and with two ticks left FDU-Madison's Emma Ciquera finished a feed from Marissa Ross on an up goal to cut the lead to 7-2 and that would be the score after one.
- Washington outscored FDU-Madison 6-1 in the second to take a 13-3 lead into halftime with Morrall scoring her second of the quarter with 38 seconds left capping the scoring.  Sutherland pumped in two scores in the stanza, while Laubach and Wilson netting one each.  Lizzy Escudero scored the Devils lone goal of the second.
- Washington scored both goals in the third to take a 15-3 lead heading into the fourth.
- In the fourth, the Shorewomen outscored the Devils, 2-1, to provide the final margin.

For The Shorewomen (1-0)
- Morrall (five goals), Sutherland (four goals and one assist), Laubach (four goals), Wilson (three scores and one helper), Devlin (goal and assist)
- In Goal: Sydney Wingate (30:00, two saves, three goals), Emily Markley (25:13, one save, one goal), Gianna Maggi (4:37, zero saves, zero goals)
- Morrall (six draw controls to tie for game-best, two caused turnovers and two ground balls), Mackenzie Boughey (two caused turnovers), Devlin and Laubach (two ground balls)
- The Shorewomen won 13 of the game's 23 draw controls, scored three up goals and held a 31-12 edge in shots.
- WC went a perfect 15-for-15 in clears, went 4-for-5 in free position shots and 12 ground balls.

For FDU-Florham (0-1)
- Scoring: Ciquera and Ross (goal and assist)
- In Goal: Maddy Apap (30:00, five saves, 13 goals), Alison Kozik (30:00, five saves, four goals)
- Ross (six draw controls to lead team)
- The Devils went 6-for-8 in clears and had seven more turnovers than WC, 13-6.
- FDU-Florham went 0-for-1 in free position chances and totaled four ground balls.

Notes
- It was the Shorewomen's second straight win win in a season opener.  Last season, WC topped Stevenson 16-8.
- Washington and FDU-Madison squared off in women's lacrosse for the first time today.
- Morrall now has 105 draws in her career, ranking 12th all-time as she passed Rachel Bartee '12 on the all-time list.  Bartee won 100 draws in her four seasons with the team.  Anna Bennett '21 was the most recent player to reach 100 all-time draws, which she achieved at Christopher Newport in the 2020 season.
