Shoremen Split Two Matches In South Carolina

Team Tops St. Mary’s 9-0 Before Falling to Division I College of Charleston

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Washington College men's tennis team split a pair of matches today at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center.  In the morning match, the Shoremen downed St. Mary's (Md.) 9-0 before falling to Division I College of Charleston in the afternoon match, 7-0.

Doubles
- The Shoremen won all three doubles matches in the match.  Washington's duo of Brady Burns and Christian Gruyon won at third doubles by default due to St. Mary's unable to field to duo.  The Shoremen took a 2-0 lead as Jack Fanshawe and Landon Strober captured an 8-2 win over Stephen Alam and Nick Rohr at first doubles.  In second doubles, Aaradith Ravichandran and Ryohei Kawai came away with an 8-4 win over the Seahawks' Keawe Johnson and Ethan Black.

Singles
- The Shoremen clinched the match as it picked up two victories in singles at No. 5 and No. 6 due to the Seahawks unable to provide an opponent.  Burns won at five and Johannes Ludwigstorff got the win at six.
- Ravichandran picked up a win at No. 4 in the first match to finish as he swept Max Esztergomi, 6-1, 6-0.
- Gruyon took care of Rohr, 6-2, 6-1, at second singles in the next match to conclude.
- Perkins had his way with Johnson, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 singles in the second to last match to end.
- Andre Remi-Jakobi would complete the shutout win for the Shoremen as he came away with a 6-1, 7-6 win at the top spot over Alam.

Notes
- Washington improves to 1-3 on the season, while St. Mary's falls to 3-2.
- The Shoremen and Seahawks were playing for the first time since March 4, 2017, a 9-0 WC win.  WC has won 23 of the 25 all-time meetings.

Doubles
- The match was played under Division I rules with the team winning at least two of the doubles matches earning one total team point and the doubles matches being played to a six-game pro set.
- Third doubles finished first and the Cougars' duo of Juan Diego Rojas Mora and Noah Borges topped Burns and Ravichandran, 6-0.  Second doubles was next to conclude and the College of Charleston's Mattia Bernardi and Johnny Wang came away with a 6-0 victory over Gruyon and Strober.  Top doubles flight was the last to end as Matias Gaedechens and Zac Larke bested the Shoremen's Jakobi and Kawai, 6-1.

Singles
- Jordyn Larke won the first singles match to finish at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Perkins.
- Rojas Mora downed Ravichandran at No. 6, 6-4, 6-0, in the next match to finish.
- Gaedechens secured victory for the Cougars as he topped Gruyon, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4.
- Borges topped Jakobi in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2 in the next match to end.
- Wang netted a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 as he bested Kawai.
- Zac Larke got the better of Strober at No. 1 in the last singles match to finish, 6-3, 6-3.

Notes
- The Division I Cougars improve to 6-7, while the Shoremen fall to 1-4.
- It was the fourth all-time meeting between the two programs, the first since 2019.
