Pride Uses Big Ninth to Down Shoremen, 6-2

Santiago Tosses Seven Shutout Frames and Kinsey Socks Homer for Washington

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting Widener broke a 1-1 tie with five runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning on its way to a 6-2 win over host Washington College on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference baseball game at Athey Baseball Park in the home opener for the Shoremen.  The Pride is 1-3 on the season, while the Shoremen are 0-4.

How It Happened
- In the bottom of the fourth inning, Drew Kinsey put the Shoremen ahead 1-0 on a home run to left field.
- It remained 1-0 until the top of the eighth when Kevin Bukowski scored on a wild pitch with one away to tie it.
- Nick Barenz worked out a two out walk and on the play, Myles Calderbank scored on a wild pitch to give the Pride a 2-1 lead.  The next hitter, Brendan Raven hit a two-run double to left-center that scored Bukowski and Barenz that gave Widener a 4-1 advantage.  Jack Balcer would cap the outburst with a two-run homer to right field to give the visitors a five-run lead into the bottom of the ninth as Raven scored ahead of Balcer.
- Chase Ruppel would get one back for Washington on a two-out base hit through the left side that scored Kinsey and allowed Logan Yi to coming up as the tying run at the plate.  Widener pitcher Aidan O'Brien would get Yi to fly out to right to end the game.

For The Shoremen (0-4)
- Hitting: Kinsey (2-for-4, two runs, home run, RBI), Scooter SanFilippo (two walks)
- Pitching: Izaiah Santiago (seven innings, one hit, zero runs, four walks, eight strikeouts), Alex Martin (loss 0-1, one inning, five runs, five earned, one walk, zero strikeouts)
- Washington had six hits and drew four walks while leaving 10 on base. 
- The Shoremen made two errors in the game, leading to zero unearned runs for the Pride.

For Widener (1-3)
- Hitting: Balcer (2-for-5, two RBI, home run), Raven (two RBI), Bukowski (two runs), Xavier Ruley (two walks)
- Pitching: O'Brien (win 1-0, four innings, two hits, one unearned run, two walks, nine strikeouts), Trae Sanders (five innings, four hits, one run, one earned, two walks, three strikeouts)
- The Pride notched six hits, drew six walks and had one get on via hit by pitch as they left eight on base.
- Widener had three errors in the game, leading to one unearned run for WC.

- Santiago was named the Goose Nation TV Shoremen Player of the Game.
