Shorewomen Sweep Bears In First Games Of Conference Play

Chestertown, MD – Shorewomen sweep in their first conference doubleheader against Ursinus, 3-1 and 6-3. 

Game 1: Washington College 3 Ursinus 1
How It Happened
  • The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth where the Shorewomen would score all of their runs. Lexi Barnhart was walked and put on first, the next at bat Lilly Wenzel homered sending both her and Barnhart home to take the lead 2-0. Chloe Trefz singled to center field and two batters later Mia Mavoides singled up the middle to send her home. 
  • Ursinus scored in the top of the next inning after three singles allowed Mallen to cross home plate. 
  • The Shorewomen had one more hit in the bottom of the sixth as Barnhart singled to right side but she was left on base as the Bears' defense got Lilly Wenzel and Gracelyn Goforth both got out on a double play The Shoremen ended the game up 3-1.

For The Shoremen (9-10-1)
Hitting: Lilly Wenzel ( 1 for 3, 2 RBI, 1 homerun), Mia Mavoides ( 1 for 3 , 1 RBI)
Pitching: Lexi Barnhart ( win 4-5, 7.0 innings pitched, 5 strikeouts)

For The Bears (8-13)
Hitting: Five Bears went 1 for 3 with 1 single.
Pitching: Andrusiew ( loss 4-6, 6.0 innings pitched)

How It Happened
  • Similar to the first go around, the game was scoreless until the fourth inning. The Shorewomen went up first as Nevaeh Unzueta had a single run home run to center field.
  • The Bears scored in the next inning as a defensive error allowed Ursinus to take the lead 2-0. 
  • The Shorewomen were able to reclaim the lead after Trefz singled to right field and Hannah Solge was walked. A Lilly Cook single allowed Trefz to cross home. Barnhart then singled up the middle to send Solge home and take the lead 3-2. Two stolen bases and a Goforth single and Wenzel double allowed the Shorewomen to score three more times increasing their lead 6-2. 
  • The Bears scored once more in the top of the seventh but it was not enough as they fell to the Shorewomen 6-3.

Hitting: Nevaeh Unzueta ( 1 for 2, 1 RBI) Lilly Wenzel ( 1 for 3, 2 RBI, 1 double)
Pitching: Brynn Balliet (win 6-3 , 7.0 innings pitched, 5 strikeouts)

Hitting: Mallen ( 2 for 4, 1 double), Andrusiew ( 1 for 3, 1 double )
