BRIGANTINE, N.J. – The Washington College Women's Rowing Team combined with the men's team to win the Overall Team Points Trophy at the Battle at Brigantine on Saturday on a 2000-meter course on the Bonita Tideway.
Â
Originally slated to race Friday evening and twice on Saturday morning, the schedule was reduced to one race early Saturday morning due to high winds on both days. Opening up the morning racing was the women's second varsity eights which would see the Shorewomen row a solid race to third place against the winning boat from conference foe Stockton University and second-place Thomas Jefferson University (DII) in a time of 7:45.05.
Â
The first varsity eight race rounded out the racing and provided a near photo-finish between the top three boats. The Shorewomen raced the first 1,000 meters in third place before putting together a strong push in the third 500 meters to come up to Stockton and Thomas Jefferson who were battling for first place. The last 500 meters was a pitched battle between the three boats with Stockton and Washington College methodically erasing Jefferson's lead as they closed in on the finish line. The three bow balls crossed the line with less than one second separating first place and third place with Jefferson (6:36.20) holding on for the lead and Washington College (6:36.78) surging in front of Stockton (6:37.10) to claim second place. Also competing in the race was Franklin & Marshall, who finished fourth in 7:11.02.

Quote From Head Coach Kari Hughes
"This was our second racing opportunity this season and again, our athletes showed their resiliency and ability to adjust to changing conditions and schedules as they focused on putting together their best race this season. The 2nd Varsity handled the rough water conditions excellently and were able to race a solid race from start to finish. The improvements they have shown in just one week is really exciting. And the tenacity and grit we saw from the 1st Varsity in their come-from-behind charge in these rough conditions was exemplary - they had made a number of technical changes this week and combined with the raciness of each athlete, they put together their best race yet."
