Kennedyville, MD - The Washington College Trap & Skeet Team wrapped up the NGB portion of their season at the Atlantic Flyway Sporting Clays competition at Hopkins Game Farm.
This is a registered target event sanctioned by the National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA) and was the first registered tournament for 3 of our athletes. Sporting Clays is often described as golf with a shotgun where participants move through a course filled with different target presentations including crossing, quarting, looping, and even targets that "run" across the ground.
The team split into three groups of three and began the tournament on the field side of the course. The day skies were clear but a stiff and variable wind made the already technical targets that much more sporting. WCTS athletes rose to the challenge and put on a solid performance over the course of the 2 hour long event.
The first squad made up of Captain Chris Johnson 26', MJ Rosenstiel '28, and David Daniels '29 began on station 15 and started off strong. On a fast rising bird and a long incomer, Johnson went 6 for 6 on the opening station while Rosenstiel and Daniels both smoked 5. Over the next 5 stations Rosenstiel went 27/30 setting a solid pace followed closely by Johnson's 25/30. After the dust settled Rosenstiel claimed high gun honors for the squad and secured D Class 1st place with a final score of 79/100. Johnson's consistency over the remainder of the course earned him a D Class 2nd place finish with a 73/100. Daniels found his pace near the end of the course going 6/6 on two of the last four stations, ended with a 60/100 and was ranked 8th of 15 in C Class.
The second squad composed of Captain Colin Krug '26, Max McNulty Van Oordt '27, and Jeffrey Paes '29 also started on station 15 and it was McNulty starting strong with a 6/6 while Krug and Paes both went 4/6. McNulty seemed to favor the middle section of the course and ran two more stations and only dropped one target on four others, ending the day with a 67/100 and a 4th place finish in D Class. Krug ran station 1 clean and went 5 for 6 on four other stations finishing with a 58/100. Paes, who registered his first ever 100 sporting clays targets, was the only C Class shooter to go 6/6 on station 3 and finished the day with a 44/100.
The third squad was fielded by Trice Moore '28, Gracie Heintzelman '28, and Lily Dean '29 who started their round on station 14. The wind played heavily with the targets here but Moore was able to hit 5 out of 6 setting a solid pace for the rest of the tournament. Heintzelman was able to hit 3 of 6 but posted 4 of 6 or better on 7 stations throughout the event. Dean, like Paes, also registered her first 100 targets today, breaking 3s and 4s over the next few stations. The group finished on station 13 and Moore ended with a 73/100 matching Johnson but after tie-breaker stations claimed D Class 3rd place.
Washington College Trap and Skeet would like to thank the Hopkins Game Farm staff for hosting the event as well as the Hopkins family, which include two alumni of Washington College.
