MJ Rosenstiel Locks in Highest Overall at Battle of the Bay

Sudlersville, MD- The Washington College Trap & Skeet hosted their annual Battle of the Bay collegiate tournament. This event is an annual competition that normally brings the University of Delaware and Naval academy teams. This year only Delaware was able to make the trip but that didn't stop the Shoremen and Shorewomen from displaying their skills on the field during the friendly duals match.

Battle of the Bay is used as a warm up for teams competing at regional championships through ACUI, the governing body for collegiate clay target shooting. Four 50 target events were held over the course of the day including Skeet, Doubles Skeet, Trap, and Doubles Trap.

How it happened:
  • The two WCTS squads split into groups of three and were each paired with two University of Delaware (UD) athletes rounding out three squads of 5. The day was perfect with clear skies, good light, and only a slight breeze letting the targets fly true.
  • Event 1 - American Skeet, WCTS athletes took full advantage of the weather and home field advantage led by MJ Rosenstiel's '28 perfect 50 straight and followed closely by Trice Moore '28 (47/50) and senior captain Colin Krug '26 (46/50), the Shoremen claimed all three podium positions. The team score was rounded out by Max McNulty Van Oordt '27 (45/50) and Gracie Heintzelman '28 (44/50). Posting a team score of 232/250 WCTS put up a strong 92.8% hit rate which is the highest to date this season.
  • Event 2 - Doubles Skeet began immediately after event 1 and again the Shoreman duo of Rosenstiel (47/50) and Moore (46/50) claimed the top two places. Everett Moser (UD) edged out the 3rd place finish with a 43/50 just over senior captain Chris Johnson '26 who smashed 42/50. Heintzelman and McNulty both added to the final team score with 38/50 giving WCTS a combined 211/250.
  • Both teams took a break for lunch and were able to spend time with family, friends, and a few special guests. After the lunch break both teams took the field once again to finish the days events.
  • Event 3 - American Trap Singles, Rosenstiel came back strong after the break and smashed 49/50 targets followed by Heintzelman, Moore, and Jeffrey Paes '29 who all posted 47/50. After a shoot off at the end of the day Paes (+24) finished second, Moore (+23) claimed third, and  Heintzelman (+22) took fourth place. The final team score came from McNulty (46/50) giving WCTS the top five scores in the event and a team total of 236/250 or a 94.4% hit rate the highest of all disciplines this season.
  • Event 4 - Doubles Trap, saw Rosenstiel round out his fourth win of the day standing atop the podium again with 43/50. David Daniels '29 took 2nd place honors with 41/50 and Moore claimed the final podium spot with a 40/50. The team score again saw contributions from McNulty (37/50) and Krug (33/50) making the final total 194/250.
  • The High Overall awards are calculated by adding all scores from all events together to crown a winner. On the men's side the Shoremen dominated the podium with Rosenstiel taking 1st place with 189/200, Moore finishing 2nd 180/200, and McNulty earning 3rd with 166/200. Heintzelman was crowned high lady for the event, breaking 160/200.
Washington College Trap and Skeet would like to thank Sudlersville Skeet Club for facilitating the event and allowing us to utilize the facility for the day. We would like to also thank all of the supporters who were able to come and watch us earn the win today.
