Shoremen Split Two Extra Inning Games With Pioneers

Chestertown, MD- The Washington College Baseball Team split with Alfred State in day one of the two day meeting between the two teams. Both games were sent to extra innings with the Shoremen taking game two with a walk off run scored on a passed ball.  

Game 1: Washington College 7 Alfred St. 14 ( 10 innings ) 

How It Happened 

  • The Shoremen scored first in the bottom of the second inning. Zach Stolze led off for the Shoremen with a single to left field. Up next, Reese Hirsh singled and was able to advance to second on an error by the shortstop. Scooter SanFilippo singled to right field as the third batter, sending Stolze home to earn the first run of the day. Brady Wozniak doubled to center field, sending in the two runners on base to extend the Shoremen lead to 3-0.  
  • Stolze was up in the bottom of the third inning with two outs, he singled, putting him at first as the shortstop lost his ball in the sun. Hirsch sent a double down the left field line allowing Stolze to advance three bases home and earn one more run for the Shoremen, 4-0.  
  • The Pioneers were able to score four runs to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning.  
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Will Turner doubled down the left field line to put himself on second. A failed hidden ball trick play by Alfred St. went in the book as a balk and Turner advanced to third. Drew Kinsey hit a triple into left center sending Turner home and putting the Shoremen up, 5-4. Chase Ruppel doubled down the right field line sending Kinsey home and put the Shoremen up two, 6-4. Hirsh singled once again to right field and sent Ruppel home.  
  • With two outs in the top of the ninth, the Pioneers earned three unearned runs to tie the score, 7-7. 
  • The Shoremen gave up seven runs in the top of the tenth inning to go down 14-7, losing their lead for the first time in the game. The Shoremen were able to get some men on base in the bottom of the tenth, but could not bat any home as they fell in game 1.  

For The Shoremen (12-6) 
Batting: Drew Kinsey ( 1 RBI, 1 triple ), Brady Wozniak ( 2 RBI, 1 double ) 
Pitching: Nico DiGrazio ( 6.2 innings pitched, 4 strikeouts ) 

Game 2: Washington College 8 Alfred St. 7 ( 10 innings ) 

How It Happened 

  • The Shoremen went down, 1-0, in the top of the first.  
  • Scooter SanFilippo hit a homerun to left field earned two runs for the Shoremen as he batted in Chase Ruppel who led off for the Shoremen with a single to left field.  
  • The Shoremen were down 7-2 in the bottom of the eighth. Matt Lewis singled to right center to put him on base. With two outs, Drew Kinsey homered to left field sending him and Lewis home. The Shoremen trailed, 7-4.  
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Zach Stolze led off and was hit by a pitch to put him on first. Singles by Scooter SanFilippo and Nick Miller loaded the bases for Matt Lewis. With one out, Lewis hit a single down to right field allowing two runs to score. The Shoremen were within one, 7-6 with Ty Everitt up at the plate. Everitt was hit by a pitch loading the bases once again for the next batter, Will Turner. Turner hit a single to left center field sending a run home and tying the score, 7-7. The Pioneers' third baseman made a jumping catch to end the inning and force a tenth inning between the two teams.  
  • In the bottom of the tenth inning, the bases were loaded with two outs as Everitt was up to bat. A passed ball by the catcher allowed Scooter San Filippo who sat on third base to run home and score the walk off run for the Shoremen. The Shoremen took game two, 8-7.

Batting:
Scooter SanFilippo ( 3 hits, 1 home run, 2 RBI ), Drew Kinsey ( 1 hit, 1 home run, 2 RBI ) 
Pitching: Connor McCloskey ( 7.0 innings pitched, 5 strikeouts )

The Shoremen are back at home on March 23rd, taking on Alfred State to finish out the series in a single game starting at 12 PM.
