Shorewomen Survive Mutiny, Downing Captains 12-11

Anson Sets Program Record 12 Draw Controls in a Game

CHESTERTOWN Md. – Washington College Women's Lacrosse withstood a late rally from visiting Christopher Newport to secure a 12-11 non-conference victory. The Shorewomen improve to 5-5 overall this season, while the Captains fall to 5-8.

How It Happened

  • After trailing 2-0 early, Anna Wilson responded for Washington off a pass from Mia Salvatierra for Washington College with 8:29 remaining in the first quarter. 
  • Salvatierra later scored a goal of her own, but the visitors put two of their own on the board before the intermission, with the score 4-2 favoring Christopher Newport. 
  • Tobin Chambers scored an up-goal, followed by Elisabeth Braswell with a goal to tie the game at 4-4 with 10:08 left in the first half. MaryCate Anson broke the tie with a goal of her own to give the home squad their first lead of the game, 5-4. 
  • The Captains scored back-to-back goals, retaking a 6-5 lead, before Piper Evans leveled things out at 6-6 with a goal of her own with 2:10 left in the second quarter. The score remained tied going into the intermission. 
  • The teams traded scoring plays, with Evans and Salvatierra each scoring to keep the game tied at 8-8. They both scored again to take a 10-8 lead in the final three minutes of the third quarter. 
  • The Shorewomen scored the first goal of the fourth with Salvatierra extending the lead, 11-8.
  • After giving up a visiting goal, Evans found the back of the net again to keep the Shorewomen ahead 12-9 with 8:56 remaining. 
  • A late rally was not enough for the visitors, as the Shorewomen survived the final 14 seconds to secure the 12-11 win.
