CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting Gettysburg spoiled the Senior Day of host Washington College in a Centennial Conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park. The Bullets took game one 11-7 and held off a Shoremen comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth inning in game two to net a 9-8 win. The Bullets cap their regular season at 30-10 overall and 9-9 in the Centennial, while the Shoremen cap the season at 19-21 and 4-14 respectively.
Gettysburg (29-10, 8-9 CC) 11 Washington College (19-20, 4-13 CC) 7 (Game 1)
How It Happened
- Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning and three batters in,
Drew Kinsey tied the game on a three-run home run to right field to score
Zach Stolze and
Chase Ruppel ahead of him to make it 3-1. With two outs,
Matt O'Connor singled off the glove of the first baseman and rolled down the line to let
Ty Everitt and
Scooter SanFilippo to score to make it 5-1.
- Gettysburg got one in the top of the fifth to cut it to 5-2 and took the lead for the rest of the game with a seven-run top of the sixth, 9-5.
- Down 10-5 entering the last of the eighth,
Nick Miller socked a home run down the right field line leading off the frame to trim it to 10-6 and a Ruppel single through the left side got
Reese Hirsh home with two away to cut the lead to 10-7.
- The Bullets scored a two-out run in the top of the ninth to provide the final margin.
For The Shoremen (19-20, 4-13 CC)
- Hitting: Kinsey (1-for-2, three-run homer, walk), Stolze (3-for-4, run), Ruppel (2-for-4, run, RBI, walk), Miller (2-for-5, home run), O'Connor (two RBI)
- Pitching:
Tyler Titus (loss 0-1, zero innings, three hits, three runs, one earned, zero walks, zero strikeouts)
- Washington had 13 hits, three seven walks and had three get on by a hit by pitch while leaving 10 on base.Â
- The Shoremen made two errors in the game, leading to four unearned runs for the Bullets.
Notes
- With his home run, Kinsey hit his 11th of the season to give him the most home runs in a single season by the Shoremen. Entering today, him and Ruppel were tied with 10. Kinsey had previously set the mark last spring with nine. He currently owns the program mark for career longballs with 23.
- The team honored seniors Miller, SanFilippo,
Kyle Avellino,
Alex Martin and
Will Turner between the two games.

How It Happened
- With Gettysburg leading 2-0 entering the last of the fourth, the Shoremen scored three times to take a 3-2 lead, all coming with two away. Everitt singled through the right side to plate Stolze to cut it to 2-1. On the play the throw to try to nail Kinsey at third got away and allowed Kinsey to tie it at 2-2 with Everitt reaching third. Everitt scored on an infield single to third by SanFilippo to put WC ahead 3-2.
- The lead did not last long as Gettysburg scored three times with two away in the top of the fifth to grab a 5-3 lead.
- Two innings later the Shoremen got one back on a Hirsh base hit to left that plated Miller to trim it to 5-4 with nobody out.
- Gettysburg scored four times in the top of the ninth to take a 9-4 lead entering the last of the ninth.
- The Shoremen did not go down quietly in the ninth, scoring four times themselves. With zero outs, Hirsh singled through the right side to plate both
Tahir Parker and
Brady Wozniak to cut it to 9-6. A one-out sacrifice fly by Kinsey plated Hirsh to trim it to 9-7. With two away, Everitt tallied his 100th career hit on a single up the middle to score Turner and it was a 9-8 game and the tying run at third in
Matt Lewis and Everitt as the winning run at first. However, San Filippo flew out to center to end the game.
