Trap & Skeet Sweep HOA Podium at Battle of the Bay

Sudlersville, MD- The Washington College Trap & Skeet hosted their annual Battle of the Bay collegiate tournament. This event is an annual competition that normally brings the University of Delaware and Naval academy teams. This year only Delaware was able to make the trip but that didn't stop the Shoremen and Shorewomen from displaying their skills on the field during the friendly duals match.

Battle of the Bay is used as a warm up for teams competing at regional championships through ACUI, the governing body for collegiate clay target shooting. Four 50 target events were held over the course of the day including Skeet, Doubles Skeet, Trap, and Doubles Trap.

How it Happened
  • The two WCTS squads split into groups of three and were each paired with two University of Delaware (UD) athletes rounding out three squads of 5. The day was overcast with misting rain and light variable wind that caused the targets to dance in flight.
  • Event 1 - American Skeet, WCTS athletes took on the adversarial weather and started strong with home field advantage. The Shoremen were led by the first year duo of Ethan Kimmins '30 and Cole Coppage '30 who both broke 48 of 50 followed closely by Trice Moore '28 and Eric Grant '30 (46/50). Max McNulty Van Oordt '27 added a 44/50 to round out the top 5 scores. After a 1 pair sudden death shootoff for 1st and 2nd Coppage came out on top with Kimmins taking 2nd and University of Delaware's Everett Moser claimed 3rd place. Matching their result from 2025 WCTS posted a team score of 232/250 or a 92.8% hit rate which.
  • Event 2 - Doubles Skeet began immediately after event 1 and again Kimmins claimed top honors  breaking 47 of 50 targets. Moore and Grant tied again (44/50) while Coppage (42/50) and Gracie Heintzelman '27 (41/50) also added to the top 5 scores. In another 1 pair sudden death shootoff Moore claimed 2nd place on the podium while Grant finished 3rd. WCTS tallied a team score of 218/250 increasing 7 targets over their 2025 finish.
  • Event 3 - Doubles Trap, saw Moore come back from the break strong crushing 40/50 and claiming 1st place uncontested. Coppage and Heintzelman both added 37 to the team total while Kimmins (36/50) and Grant (35/50) claimed the last 2 spots contributing to the team score. Coppage and Heintzelman took to the shootoff field and after a 20 bird shootoff Heintzelman's 16 overtime targets edged out Coppage with 15 to claim 2nd and 3rd respectively. The team scored a final total of 185/250 which was down slightly from the 194 they shot last year.
  • Event 4 - American Trap Singles, Kimmins came back and smashed 49/50 targets to claim his 3rd 1st place finish of the day. He was supported by Coppage (47/50), Grant (45/50) Moore (44/50) and Heintzelman (43/50). University of Delaware's Will Kintzer broke a solid 48/50 to claim 2nd place honors while Coppage took home the 3rd place finish. WCTS top five scores in the event totaled 228/250 slightly below last year.
  • The High Overall awards are calculated by adding all scores from all events together to crown a winner. On the men's side the Shoremen dominated the podium with Kimmins taking 1st place with 180/200. Moore and Coppage tied with 174/200 and went into overtime shooting 10 trap targets and 10 skeet doubles targets. They tied again after the overtime trap round both breaking 8 but Moore finished strong in skeet doubles breaking 9 to Coppage's 7 earning him 2nd while Coppage claimed 3rd. Heintzelman was crowned high lady for the event, breaking 162/200.
Washington College Trap and Skeet would like to thank Sudlersville Skeet Club for facilitating the event and allowing us to utilize the facility for the day. We would like to also thank all of the supporters who were able to come and watch us earn the win today.
