Shorewomen Demote 19th Ranked Captains with Fourth Quarter Surge, 20-16

Washington Gets First Win Over Ranked Squad Since 2019

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Visiting Washington College scored five consecutive goals in the fourth quarter to turn a 15-15 tie into a 20-15 advantage in registering a 20-16 win over host #19 Christopher Newport on Wednesday afternoon at Jennings Stadium in a non-conference women's lacrosse contest. The Shorewomen improve to 7-2 on the season, while the Captains drop to 8-2. It was Washington's first win over a ranked side since topping #25 St. Mary's (Md.), 10-9, on March 27, 2019.

How It Happened
- Trailing 4-2 in the first quarter, Washington would net three straight tallies to take a 5-4 edge with 1:52 left in the stanza on a Lis Braswell score.
- However the Captains got the final two of the opening quarter to lead 6-5 after one.
- Malery Andrews would score the first three goals of the second for the Shorewomen to give the visitors a 8-6 lead just 3:15 into the frame.
- Christopher Newport would counter with the next three to grab a 9-8 lead with 4:57 to go in the second.
- The Shorewomen outscored the Captains 3-2 the rest of the second and the game would go to halftime even at 11-11. Piper Evans tied it with 18 ticks left on a pass from Mia Salvatierra.
- Down 13-12 in the third, WC registered three of the final four goals of the quarter to take a 15-14 lead into the fourth with Anna Wilson scoring from Salvatierra with 1:06 remaining.
- In the fourth, the Captains tied it on a down goal 2:25 into the fourth quarter at 15-15.
- Evans would put the Shorewomen ahead for good, 16-15, and ignited the game's key 5-0 run for the guests 31 seconds later with Salvatierra picking up the assist on an up goal.
- Braswell would score the second and fourth goals of the run and Salvatierra deposited the third and fifth goals of the run with Salvatierra capping the run with 3:22 left to give Washington a 20-15 cushion.
- Christopher Newport would get one back with 2:16 remaining in the game, but could draw no closer.

For The Shorewomen (7-2)
- Scoring: Salvatierra (four goals, game-high four assists, contest-high eight points), Evans (five goals to lead all players, two assists, seven points), Braswell (four goals), Andrews (three scores), Wilson (two goals)
- In Goal: Maddy Kissinger (60:00, nine saves, 16 goals allowed)
- Wilson (five draw controls), MaryCate Anson and Madison Maguire (four caused turnovers), Anson and Kissinger (five ground balls)
- The Shorewomen had 19 draw controls and had 30 shots.
- WC went 14-for-20 in clears, went 5-for-5 in free position shots, 13 caused turnovers and 17 ground balls.

Notes
- Washington is now 8-0 all-time against Christopher Newport with two overtime victories. 
- Salvatierra moved into fifth place all-time in program history in career points and now has 240.
