Tom Fiala ‘14 was named the fifteenth head coach in the history of Washington College Baseball on August 2, 2022. Previously, he had served as the team’s pitching coach from 2018-22, while being promoted to assistant coach from 2020-22.
In his first season in 2023, Fiala earned his first win as head coach on February 24 in a 19-5 win at Gallaudet. That season also saw the Shoremen top Centennial Conference Tournament team Swarthmore on April 8 in a 7-6 victory in 10 innings.
Washington improved its Centennial Conference wins total in 2024 by three triumphs, including a 12-2 road win at Franklin & Marshall on April 16 and a doubleheader sweep of visiting Muhlenberg on April 27. That season saw both Logan Yi and Drew Kinsey earn All-Centennial Conference first team honors and all-region recognition by D3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).
The Shoremen nearly doubled their overall win total in 2025 from the season before with 19 victories, including a win over NCAA Tournament team Oswego in a 17-9 win on February 28. Fiala coached his first Centennial Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in Kinsey.
Fiala, a 2014 graduate of Washington College, was named the pitching coach at his alma mater in September 2018 and was promoted to assistant head coach in July 2020. The team went 80-41for a .661 winning percenage during his four seasons as an assistant coach.
Fiala has been active in coaching baseball since his graduation from WC. Prior to his return to Chestertown, Fiala served as the pitching coach at CCBC-Catonsville. While there, he developed and implemented a pitching program for a staff of 14 pitchers and also assisted the head coach in evaluating and developing mental and physical attributes for all student-athletes on the team. Prior to his time at CCBC-Catonsville, Fiala spent three years as a coach for his scholastic alma mater, New Hope-Solebury (Pa.) High School. He saw time as an assistant junior varsity baseball coach before moving up to assistant varsity baseball coach and also served as an assistant varsity basketball coach.
He was a four-year member of the Shoremen Nine during his time as a student-athlete at Washington College. As a senior he went 1-0 with a career-best 3.68 ERA in 2014. He helped the team reach the 2012 Centennial Conference Championship Game as a sophomore and as a junior in 2013, he tossed a personal-high 16 games.
A Dean's List student, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History with minor in Economics from the College in May 2014.
