Alex Calder-Butler joined Washington College in July 2023 from Gwynedd Mercy University, where she served as the head coach from 2020-22.
In her first campaign with the Shorewomen, Calder-Butler guided the team to eight wins, including a 2-0 win over #16 Ursinus. Two players earned All-Centennial honors in her inaugural season leading the team.
Shorewomen Field Hockey picked up a pair of wins over nationally ranked teams in her second season guiding the squad in 2024, including a 2-1 overtime win versus NCAA Tournament squad #16 Shenandoah and a 4-3 triumph at #24 Swarthmore. The team had two players land all-conference recognition, and one Shorewoman secured NFHCA (National Field Hockey Coaches Association) All-Region V honors.
During her two seasons as coach of the Shorewomen, the Shorewomen have earned a pair of NFHCA National Team Academic Awards, and Kat Eposito earn an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, Centennial Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Field Hockey and Centennial Conference Female Tri-Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
In her first full season at Gwynedd Mercy in 2021, she guided the Griffins to the semifinals of the Atlantic East Conference tournament. The Griffins would make it back-to-back with another appearance at the AEC Tournament in 2022.
Under Calder-Butler, the Griffins received two NFHCA All-Region picks, three first team All-AEC selections, and a pair of second team nods. The team was also consistently recognized by the NFHCA for its academic achievements with dozens of All-Academic awards and one team award designation.
Calder-Butler played collegiately at Gettysburg for four years as a midfielder and served as captain for the Bullets during her senior season. After graduating from Gettysburg with an English degree, Calder served as a graduate assistant coach at St. Lawrence University. She completed her master's degree in educational leadership before taking over at Gwynedd Mercy in 2020.
