Anna Germain Scozzafava was the first coxswain in Washington College women’s rowing history to be named an All-American and was tabbed as the best in all of Division III as a senior.
Anna joined the Shorewomen during the spring of her freshman year and became the coxswain of the Shorewomen’s second varsity eight. That spring saw the second varsity eight turn in several impressive finishes, including a third-place showing at the Atlantic Collegiate League Sprints.
The following year, Anna moved up to cox the team’s first varsity eight, a crew which became the top-ranked boat in the Mid-Atlantic Region of Division III. That distinction was one they would not relinquish for the rest of Anna’s career.
During Anna’s junior season, the Shorewomen were ranked as high as seventh in Division III. She guided the Shorewomen to a decisive victory in their Spring Break race in Florida against crews from three higher-division schools. The Shorewomen’s first varsity eight was also the lone Division III crew to reach the final at the Murphy Cup. Anna became the first WC coxswain to be named an All-American after the season, landing on the second team.
Anna’s senior year saw the Shorewomen truly arrive as a national contender. She coxed the first varsity eight to a victory and its first-ever win over national power Ithaca at the Atlantic Collegiate League Sprints. That performance boosted the Shorewomen to their best-ever national ranked of second in all of Division III and earned them ECAC Crew of the Week honors. Anna was named the lone coxswain of the 2003 Division III All-America first team following the season and was also the co-female winner of the College’s 2003 Eldridge Eliason Award.
Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Anna Germain Scozzafava into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 19th day of October, 2019.
