Washington College

Turner Birch Hastings will always be remembered for the instrumental part he played in establishing soccer as a varsity sport at Washington College.

He helped field the first varsity team in 1946. As a player/coach in 1947, Hastings guided his team to an undefeated season in eight games and the Mason-Dixon Conference Championship. As a player, he won All-American honors that year and earned a tryout at center forward for the 1948 Olympic team.

In baseball, he was a solid .300 hitter and a reliable outfielder, despite having his collegiate career interrupted by World War ll. He played four years for Coach Tom Kibler and in 19476 earned all Mason-Dixon honors.

He was a member of Theta Chi fraternity and the Varsity Club during his days at Washington College, and became a devoted alumnus.

His life came to a tragic end on January 15, 1971, when he and four other men were killed in a plane crash returning from a Vermont ski trip.
