The late Richard Monroe Gamber made his mark in athletics at Washington College, winning eleven letters in football, lacrosse and basketball. He was a four-year starter as an end on the gridiron, and captained the team during his senior season. In 1933, Gamber was a second-team selection on the Baltimore Evening Sun’s All-State team after earning honorable mention in 1932.
Gamber was a three-time Honorable Mention All-Maryland mid fielder on the Shoremen lacrosse team and a second team all-league guard in basketball in 1933. He was awarded the Simpers Medal for best all-around athlete at Washington College as a junior.
It has been said of Gamber that while he may not have had all the natural ability a few of his teammates had, none could exceed him in determination, hustle and success.
Gamber was class president for four years, and a member of the Silver Pentagon Society, a national honorary leadership society, for three years. He was Student Council President as a senior, and secretary as a junior.
After graduation, Gamber enjoyed a productive career as an insurance executive at Alexander and Alexander, Inc. of Baltimore, specializing in the insurance of railroad firms. He began his stay at the company as a CPA in 1938 and eventually retired as a Vice President in 1974.
Gamber died in 1977 in Scotch Plains, (NJ) after a short illness.
Washington College is proud to induct Richard Monroe Gamber into the Athletic Hall of Fame this 18th day of October, 1991.
