Christopher “Squirrel” Brandt was the leading scorer on the 1989-90 men’s basketball team that reached new heights, finishing third in the nation in Division III.

“Squirrel” averaged 20.3 points per game during the Shoremen’s unforgettable 1989-90 season while also handing out a team-best 110 assists. He scored at a high volume, but also efficiently, shooting 44% from the field, 47% from three-point range, and 87% on 223 free-throw attempts that season. He poured in 37 points in the Shoremen’s 107-104 Sectional Final win over Western Connecticut State to secure a spot in the NCAA Division III Semifinals. He went on to score 34 points in the Shoremen’s 87-86 victory over Calvin in the national third-place game and was named to the NCAA Division III All-Tournament Team.

While “Squirrel’s” scoring exploded as a senior, he also average 12.4 points per game and a team-best 3.6 assists as a junior as the Shoremen finished 20-7 and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Over the course of his four-year career, the Shoremen went a combined 82-28 and their 25 wins in 1989-90 stand as the program record. They qualified for the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament during all four of his years on the team.

All told, “Squirrel” scored 1,272 career points at Washington College, a total which stands as the 15th-most in the program’s 107-year history. His 629 points and 193 free throws made during the 1989-90 season both stand as single-season school records.

Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Christopher “Squirrel” Brandt into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 19th day of October, 2019.
