The contributions of Dr. Alexander Colclough Dick to Washington College athletics will never show up in a box score or as a statistic.
He was the first surgeon at the new Kent and Queen Anne’s Hospital in 1935. After Dr. Harry Simpers, one of Kent County’s great general practitioners, retired in 1947, Dr. Dick became Washington College’s unofficial doctor and trainer.
It was a simpler time than today and Washington College was a small school on a tight budget. People who loved the College and gave of their time, often for free, kept it alive.
Former athletic director Edward L. Athey (1948-1987) relates a clear-cut picture of Dr. A. C. Dick’s contribution to Washington College: A daily occurrence was for me to call Mrs. Boyer, Dr. Dick’s nurse, and request that Dr. Dick see one or two students. Mrs. Boyer would generally say, “Dr. Dick has a roomful of patients waiting to see him, but let me ask him.” I can’t remember one time, Mrs. Boyer returning to the phone and not saying: “Dr. Dick says to send them over, he’ll work them in.” And this he did for all the years that I can remember.
A graduate of the Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. Dick has made Kent County his home for over 50 years.
He has won the respect of all who have known him and has been greatly honored in his own time by his many friends in Chestertown, Kent County, and at Washington College.
