Ellery J. Ward class of 1936 is a native of Cumberland, Maryland. He is one of several Washington College athletes to have earned a letter in four varsity sports. He played a guard position on the foot all team for four years and was a mender of the 1934 undefeated football team. In recognition of his outstanding offensive and defensive ability he was the recipient of All State honors in 1934. In basketball he played as a forward or a guard, and in either position usually gave a good account of himself. In track he participated is such field events as the shot put, discus and the javelin throws. He played point on the 1934 lacrosse team. He was awarded the Simpers Medal as All Around Athlete of the year 1934.
Following his graduation Wardie began teaching in Warring-ton, Virginia, before moving to Symrna, Delaware where he remained until he entered military service during World liar II. At the conclusion of the war he returned to Chestertown and accepted an appointment by the Kent County Bo rd of Education as a physical education teacher and coach. He was selected to introduce the driver education course in the county in 1954. In 1962 he was appointed principal of the Rock Hall School, a position he held until he retired in 1974.
Throughout most of his career he was active in the State’s physical education program, serving on various committees of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association, an organization of which, he at one time, served as chairman.
Wardie’s contributions to junior athletic programs in Kent County began almost as soon as he returned to the county. He organized the first church Sunday School basketball League in the county which is still active at the present time. He was instrumental in organizing Little League baseball in the county. For twenty years he was closely associated with youth activities. In 1949, in appreciation for his many services he was cited as the outstanding citizen of Kent County. In 1971 the Maryland Recreation and Parks Commission awarded him their Service Citation.
Wardie is an avid Sportsman dividing his leisure time between golf, fishing and hunting.
