Washington College

John Edward Fitzgerald attended Washington College from 1929 until 1932, competing in baseball for two years and in basketball for three. Baseball was dropped from the intercollegiate schedule during his junior year. Unfortunately, due to the death of his father, he had to withdraw from college after his junior year. He later entered George Washington University and obtained his degree in 1937.

Fitzgerald was an outstanding first baseman on a team that was considered by Coach Tom Kibler to be one of the best to ever represent the College. Coach Kibler also considered FItzgerald to be one of the most talented baseball competitors to play first base for him. His fielding and hitting were both exceptional. He also contributed significantly to the success of the basketball program for three years, either as a starter or a first line substitute.

His athletic ability earned him a chance to play professional baseball for one year with a farm team belonging to the Washington Senators.

Fitzgerald also excelled in the classroom, being selected to membership in the Blue Key honorary fraternity. He also was a member of the Phi Sigma Phi fraternity and the Cotillion Club.

Fitzgerald’s professional career was spent as an administrative officer for the National Institutes of Health – Public Health Service. He retired in 1973.
