As one of the top offensive players on the excellent Washington College men’s lacrosse teams of the late 1990s, Justin McCarthy no doubt has an important place in the athletics history of the school.
As a freshman, Justin quickly became an integral part of the Shoremen’s offense, scoring 12 goals and finishing second on the team with 21 assists. The following season was his breakout year, scoring 16 goals and assisting on 19 others en route to All-Centennial Conference first-team and All-America second-team honors.
In his junior year, when the Shoremen reached the pinnacle and won the NCAA Division III National Championship, McCarthy scored a career-best 22 goals and handed out 13 assists. He was again selected to the All-Centennial Conference first team and the All-America second team. He finished his career with a 12-goal, 22-assist season as a team captain in 1999, earning All-Centennial first-team and All-America second-team honors for the third year in a row.
Justin was honored with the College’s Senior Athletic Award in 1999 as the school’s top male senior student-athlete. He was also chosen to play in the prestigious North-South Senior All-Star Game. Justin was both a Student-Athlete Mentor at Washington College and a member of the Centennial Conference’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council and served as President of both groups as a senior.
The Shoremen enjoyed an incredible amount of success during Justin’s collegiate career, compiling a win-loss record of 53-16. In addition to winning the National Championship in 1998, the Shoremen advanced to the 1996 and 1997 National Championship Games and won the Centennial Conference Championship in each of those two years.
Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Justin R. McCarthy into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 13th day of October, 2012.
