Matt Rose served as head coach of the men’s and women’s tennis teams for eight seasons, beginning in January of 1996. He guided the Shoremen to their second-ever NCAA Division III National Championship in 1997.
During his tenure as men’s head coach, the Shoremen won eight Centennial Conference Championships and appeared in seven NCAA Division III Tournaments. The Shoremen went 121-31 in dual matches under Matt. That winning percentage of .796 is third highest by a head coach in one sport in school history.
As women’s head coach, Matt guided the Shorewomen to a share of the 2002 Centennial Conference Championship, the team’s second-ever conference title. His total win-loss record of 176-97 between both teams gave him a combined .645 winning percentage, currently the 10th best among all coaches of all sports in school history.
Matt coached the 1997 NCAA Division III Men’s Singles Champion – Damian Polla – and a total of 10 All-Americans between the two teams. Tonight, Miro Beran became the fourth of those All-Americans to be inducted into the College’s Hall of Fame.
Under Matt’s guidance, the Shoremen earned a total of 24 All-Centennial Conference singles and 15 All-Centennial doubles selections as well as six Centennial Conference Player of the Year Awards. The Shorewomen earned eight All-Centennial singles and four All-Centennial doubles selections.
Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Matt Rose into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 18th day of October, 2014.
