Outstanding performances in soccer and baseball marked the career of Mort Lenane at Washington College.

He was a brilliant performer at center halfback for Edward L. Athey’s soccer teams of 1953-54 and 1958-59, with time-out for a hitch in the military service during the Cold War.

Lenane was a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference championship team of 1954 and was named to the All-American All-South squad.

In 1958 he was All-Mason-Dixon and All-South.

In his senior year, 1959 as co-captain, he scored 11 goals, earning All-American status and Mason-Dixon and Middle Atlantic Conference honors. “His accomplishments in soccer cannot be measured in statistics,” Coach Athey said.

In baseball he was an excellent batter–hitting for average and power, .333 in 1959 and .471 in 1960. He played second base in 1954 and 1955, then moved to first base for the 1959 and 1960 seasons. He was named Most Valuable Player in 1960.

He also was a member of the varsity basketball squad during the 1953-54 and 1954-55 campaigns.

A member of Theta Chi fraternity, he graduated in 1960 with a B.A. in sociology.
