Rory Conway was halfway through an impressive baseball career at Washington College when he decided to add collegiate soccer to his athletic portfolio. He quickly became the soccer team’s leading scorer while maintaining his excellence on the baseball diamond.

A career .371 hitter with a career on-base percentage of .507, Rory was a fixture in the leadoff or second spot of the Shoremen’s line-up card for four years. He was never thrown out stealing and his 88 career walks and 13 career triples stand as school career records. In the field, he began his career as the team’s shortstop before switching to center field and was strong defensively at both positions.

After earning All-Middle Atlantic Conference first team honors in 1993, Rory brought the Shoremen into the Centennial Conference in 1994 with a 17-10 overall record and a 12-6 conference record, tying them for second in the league. Rory, a team captain, hit .397 as a senior with an on-base percentage of .580. He scored 33 runs, tripled five times, stole 22 bases, and walked a school single-season record 31 times. He was named to the All-Centennial Conference first team at the end of the season.

During Rory’s first fall on the soccer field, in 1992, he scored seven goals and assisted on another, leading the Shoremen in scoring. The following fall, he again led the team in scoring, this time finishing with seven goals and three assists. He received All-Centennial Conference honorable mention at the end of his senior season.

Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Rory Conway into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 18th day of October, 2014.
