Today, Tom Heald takes his rightful place in the Washington College Hall of Fame next to the Shoremen’s other four first-team All-Americans from the 1970s.
Tom was one of 10 men named to the Little All-America first team in 1970, his senior season. The team’s top defenseman, he served as a team captain and was named the Shoremen’s Most Valuable Player. He was also chosen for the All-South Atlantic Division first team.
During Tom’s junior season of 1969, the Shoremen won their division for the seventh consecutive year and Tom was named to the All-South Atlantic Division second team and was selected as an All-Maryland honorable mention. The Shoremen’s 1968 division-winning team went 8-3-1, while their 1967 squad was 11-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of Johns Hopkins.
The Shoremen had a well-earned reputation as the top small college lacrosse team in the nation in those days, earning a feature in Sports Illustrated during Tom’s freshman season. Tom was part of a fierce defense that allowed double digit goals to a divisional opponent just once over the course of his four years on the team.
Prior to attending Washington College, Tom was a standout scholastic player at Governor Dummer Academy in New England, where he was an All-New England first-team selection as a senior as his team won the New England Championship.
Following his playing career, Tom had a stint as an assistant coach at Brown University before beginning a career as a lawyer.
Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Tom Heald into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 18th day of October, 2014.
