William R. Russell, excelled in lacrosse and soccer and played on the last Washington College football team in 1950.

He learned lacrosse under Dr. Charles B. Clark, becoming his goaltending mainstay, 1951-53. His quick reflexes, savvy and leadership gained him the co-captain ship in 1953, the C. Markland Kelly award as the best collegiate goal tender in Maryland and third team All-American, when only one squad was selected.

Named to the North-South all-star game, he played 50 minutes, his team won 12-9 and he was named co-MVP.

In soccer he played fullback for two seasons, making the All-South team in 1952. On the last football team he played guard, center, and linebacker.

He has served on Washington College’s board for many years and headed the presidential search committee that named Douglass Cater the 23rd President of Washington College.
