Daelemans Tallies 20 Digs in Loss

COLLEGEVILLE, PA -- Host Ursinus College used early runs in each of the final three sets to post a 22-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-20, Centennial Conference volleyball win over visiting Washington College tonight in Collegeville, PA. The Bears improved to 8-12 overall and 2-4 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 9-11 and 0-5.

The first set was one of runs as Washington used an 11-2 spurt to build a 13-6 lead. Ursinus answered with a 12-4 run to pull ahead, 18-17, but the Shorewomen scored seven of the next eight points to take a 24-19 advantage on an Ursinus attack error. The Bears scored the next three points to trim the lead to 24-22, but the Shorewomen took the set on an Ursinus service error.

The Bears jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the second set and never looked back. Washington cut the lead to six three times, but could not get any closer as Gabriella Galleo closed out the set, 25-17, with a kill to tie the match at one set each.

Ursinus got off to a strong start in the third set as well, running off nine consecutive points to build a 9-2 lead. Washington answered with an 8-3 spurt to trim the margin to 12-10, but the Bears scored 10 of the next 13 points to open up a 22-13 advantage en route to the 25-17 set win.

The Bears used a 9-1 run early in the fourth set to pile up a 10-3 advantage. The Shorewomen fought back to cut the lead to three five times, but the Bears closed out the match by scoring five of the final eight points to post a 25-20 set win on a Jennifer Fargo kill.

Mary Kate Wilmoth pounded down 19 kills for Ursinus, while Kristin Hanratty added 12 kills and six aces. Galleo and Fargo contributed 14 and 13 digs, respectively, while Elizabeth Roth tallied 42 assists.

Junior libero Traci Daelemans (Tracys Landing, MD/Southern) had a match-high 20 digs for Washington, while freshman middle hitter Jenny Lee (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant) and sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Forget (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) recorded nine kills each for the Shorewomen. Lee also served five aces.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Gettysburg.
