Box Score Marcin Scores Shoremen's Goal in
Loss
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Eleventh-ranked Johns Hopkins
topped host Washington College, 5-1, in a Centennial Conference
men's soccer game tonight on Kibler Field at The Blue Jays head
into next week's conference playoffs with a 13-3-2 overall record
and a 6-2-1 mark in conference play. The Shoremen conclude their
season at 3-13-1 and 1-7-1.
Nick White gave the Blue Jays a
1-0 lead when he scored on a loose ball in the box at 10:50. The
Shoremen found the equalizer at 16:56 when freshman Tim
Marcin (Wilmington, DE/Concord) booted in a corner kick
from junior Gavin Rayburn (Bel Air, MD/John
Carroll). Hopkins pulled back in front at the 27:53 mark
as Chand Balfour scored off a cross from
Max Venker. Hopkins took a 3-1 lead on an own goal
at 33:37 when a Washington defender tried to clear a long Blue Jay
cross.
The Blue Jays struck quickly into the second half
for their fourth goal when Kevin Hueber dribbled
through multiple defenders and fired in the score at 47:04. Hopkins
scored its fifth goal in a manner worthy of Halloween as Venker's
long shot went off the crossbar and straight up into the air at
least 20 feet before bouncing in front of the net and in for a 5-1
advantage at 53:08.
Ravi Gill made two saves in goal
for Hopkins in the first 82:33. Daniel Felder
played the rest of the game in goal for Hopkins. Sophomore
goalkeeper Chris Phipps (Newark, DE/St. Mark's)
played the first 61:55 for the Shoremen, making eight saves and
allowing five goals. Freshman Tyler Cabot (Hightstown,
NJ/Peddie School) played the remainder of the game, making
three saves.
Hopkins held a 23-6 advantage in shots and a 6-5
edge in corner kicks in the game.
