CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Allison
Cappelaere had a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs
as visiting Johns Hopkins bested host Washington College, 3-0
(25-11, 25-16, 25-22), on Tuesday evening at the Cain Athletic
Center in Centennial Conference volleyball action. The Blue Jays
improve to 12-7 overall and 1-2 in the Centennial, while the
Shorewomen fall to 9-9 and 0-3 respectively.
The Blue Jays snapped a 5-5 tie in the opening set
by winning the next seven points to take control of the first set.
The Shorewomen got it as close as 13-8 on an attack error by Johns
Hopkins, but could draw no closer and the visitors went on to a
25-11 win in the set.
In the middle set, Washington trailed 14-13
following a kill by freshman outside hitter Jenny Lee
(Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant). Hopkins would respond
with a 7-0 run to grab a 21-13 lead and went on to win the set by a
25-16 tally. During the run, Alex Zenoff netted
back-to-back kills.
In the final set of the match, the Shorewomen took
an 11-10 lead on a Lee kill. The Blue Jays responded with the next
three points to take a 13-11 lead and would not relinquish the lead
the rest of the set to secure the win. Hopkins would extend its
lead to 22-16 before Washington would make one final run. The
Shorewomen cut the lead to 24-22 on a kill by sophomore outside
hitter Alyssa Forget (River Vale, NJ/Pascack
Valley), but the Blue Jays got a Zenoff kill to win the
set and the match.
For Hopkins, Becky Paynter led all
players with 31 assists in the win, while Zenoff tallied 10 kills.
The Blue Jays hit .306 in the triumph.
For Washington, Forget and sophomore outside hitter
Lauren Feeny (Upper Darby, PA/Villa Maria Academy)
had seven kills to lead the Shorewomen. Feeny hit .353 for WC in
the contest. Senior setter Caitlin Ward (Wantagh, NY/Holy
Trinity) had 19 assists to lead WC, while freshman libero
Kaitlin Rowan (Damascus, MD/Damascus) led all
participants with 13 digs.
Washington College returns to action on Saturday,
October 10, against visiting Muhlenberg in a 1:00 p.m. conference
tilt.
