WC Records Top Time in All 11
Events
CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Washington College women's
swim team won its home opener tonight at the Casey Swim Center,
defeating Eastern Shore rival Salisbury University for the 23rd
consecutive time by a final score of 123-77. The Shorewomen (2-1)
ran their non-conference dual meet winning streak to 54 with the
victory, while the Sea Gulls slipped to 2-3 with the loss.
Four Washington swimmers had the top times in two
individual events on the evening. Junior Rachel Glasser
(Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) won the 200 freestyle in
1:58.95 and captured the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.85. Senior
Kathy Gerhart (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area)
took the 100 freestyle in 55.85 and the 200 individual medley in
2:18.21. Sophomore Jenna Moore (Catonsville, MD/Mount de
Sales) recorded a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle
(24.96) and netted the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke
(1:09.25). Freshman Sarah Sykes (Haworth, NJ/Northern
Valley-Demarest) garnered wins in the 500 (5:32.46) and
the 1000 freestyle (11:17.36) events. Freshman Darcy Zink
(Baltimore, MD/Towson) won the other individual event, the
100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.78.
The Shorewomen had season-best times in five
different events in the win. Moore recorded season-best times in
the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, Gerhart notched the
season-best time in the 200 individual medley, Glasser tallied a
season-best time in the 100 butterfly and Zink chalked up the
season-best time in the 100 backstroke.
The 400 medley relay team of senior Amy
Smith (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area), freshman
Melanie Craig (Newtown, PA/Council Rock), Glasser
and Moore won the relay with a time of 4:12.89. The 400 freestyle
relay team of Zink, sophomore Mary Stroman (Bala Cynwyd,
PA/Friends Central), Sykes and Gerhart recorded the best
time with a time of 3:52.12.
The Shorewomen swam the 100 breaststroke and 400
freestyle relay events as exhibtions.
Washington recorded six second best times and two
third place finishes, as the Shorewomen took the top three places
in 200 and 1000 freestyle events. Second place finishers were
Stroman in the 200 and 500 freestyle with times of 2:04.55 and
5:35.95 respectively. Craig was second in the 200 individual medley
with a time of 2:24.60 and registered the second best time in the
100 breaststroke at 1:12.95. Zink was second in the 1000 freestyle
(11:26.67), while Smith was second in the 100 backstroke (1:05.61).
In the 1000 freestyle, freshman Emma Jackovitz (Bel Air,
MD/Bel Air) allowed Washington to take the top three in
that event with a time of 11:55.00, while sophomore Morgan
Phillips (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) recorded a time
of 2:07.61 to give the Shorewomen the top three finishers in the
200 freestyle.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a
1:00 p.m. non-conference home meet against St. Mary's (MD).
