Shorewomen Sweep Arcadia and Penn State-Berks

READING, PA -- The Washington College volleyball team won two out of three matches on Saturday afternoon at the Beaver Community Center on the campus of Penn State-Berks. The Shorewomen (7-2) fell to Delaware Valley in the opening match opened the day with a 22-25, 13-25, 26-24, 25-19 and 15-12. Washington rebounded to best Arcadia in three sets, 25-16, 27-25, 25-21 and broomed Penn State-Berks, 25-21, 25-18, 25-11.

Against Delaware Valley, the Shorewomen hit .256 in the first set to take a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-22 set win. Washington got off to a slow start in the second set, trailing, 5-1, but the Shorewomen then scored 22 of the next 28 points to take a commanding 23-11 lead en route to the 25-13 set win. The Aggies scored the final four points of the third set to get on the board with a 26-24 set win. Delaware Valley took an early lead in the fourth set and never looked back en route to a 25-19 set win to force the fifth set. In the fifth set, the Aggies scored three straight points to break an 11-11 tie to take control of the set and post the 15-12 victory, completing their comeback.

Kaitlyn Olsen and Kelsey Fisher each had 11 kills to lead the Aggies. Three Delaware Valley players recorded at least 20 digs each; Ashley Mikulsky had 24, Amy Estepp added 22, and Emily Robillard finished with 20. Jaki Blood added 18 assists, nine kills, and three service aces for the victors, while Amy Scordato had a team-high 25 assists.

Freshman libero Kaitlin Rowan (Damascus, MD/Damascus) had a match- and career-high 29 digs for the Shorewomen against the Aggies. Freshman middle hitter Jenny Lee (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant) and senior middle hitter Kelli Canada (Midlothian, VA/James River) each had a match-high 13 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Forget (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) turned in a double-double of 12 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Feeny (Upper Darby, PA/Villa Maria Academy) added 10 kills, while senior setter Caitlin Ward (Wantagh, NY/Holy Trinity) tallied a match-high 41 assists.

Against Arcadia, Washington closed out the first set on a 7-1 run to win the set, 25-16, and take a 1-0 lead in the match. In the second set, the Shorewomen fought off two Arcadia set points to take the set, 27-25, on a kill by Lee. The Shorewomen finished off the Knights with four straight points to end the 25-21 third set; the final two points came from service aces by junior defensive specialist Traci Daelemans (Tracys Landing, MD/Southern).

Feeny and Forget had 10 kills each in the win over Arcadia. Forget also tallied 10 digs to notch her second consecutive double-double. Lee added seven kills and nine digs, while Rowan had a team-best 13 digs. Ward, who recorded 34 assists, and Daelemans each served five aces in the win. Natasha Wetten led the Knights with 13 kills and 21 digs.

In the Penn State-Berks match, the Shorewomen lead 23-21 in the opening set and won the final two points on a kill by Lee and a tandem block by Lee and Canada. In the second set, Washington trailed the Nittany Lions 8-3 before scoring 17 of the next 21 points to take a 20-12 lead. During one four-point stretch of the run, Daelemans served three service aces. The third set was tied at 7-7 before the Shorewomen won 18 of the last 22 points to take the set and the match. In the 18-4 spurt, the Shorewomen had runs of 5-0 and 7-0.

Feeny lead all players with nine kills in the victory over Penn State-Berks, while Lee added eight kills. Ward handed out 34 assists, while Daelemans racked up four service aces. WC hit .253 in the victory. For the Nittany Lions, Susie Shelton had six kills to lead the way for the home team.

The Shorewomen will host Catholic in a non-conference match on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
