Box Score Canada Tallies 500th Career Kill in
Loss
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Claudia Jean
tallied match-highs of 25 digs and 14 kills as visiting Catholic
University downed host Washington College, 25-20, 25-22, 22-25,
25-18, in non-conference volleyball action tonight at the Cain
Athletic Center. The Cardinals improved to 7-2 with the four-set
win, while the Shorewomen fell to 7-3 with the loss.
Molly Owens gave the Cardinals a
16-8 lead in the first set when she recorded a kill off of a pass
from Jean. The Shorewomen would respond with a 12-7 run to cut the
Catholic to 23-20, but could not inch any closer and the Cardinals
won the last two points of the opening set.
In the second set, the two teams were knotted at
16-16 when Catholic won seven of the next nine points to take a
23-18 lead. Washington countered with a 4-1 run to reduce the
Cardinals lead to 24-22, but a setting error by the hosts gave the
final point of the second set to Catholic.
Trailing 16-13 in the third set, the Shorewomen won
10 of the next 11 points to take a 23-17 lead on a kill by
sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Forget (River Vale,
NJ/Pascack Valley) on a feed from senior setter
Caitlin Ward (Wantagh, NY/Holy Trinity). The
Cardinals got as close as 24-22, but a kill by sophomore outside
hitter Lauren Feeny (Upper Darby, PA/Villa Maria
Academy) sealed the third set for Washington.
Catholic won the first three points of the fourth
and final set and never trailed in the last set of the match. The
Cardinals took a 19-10 lead before the Shorewomen made their final
charge. Washington won the next five points to trim the lead to
19-15 on an unassisted kill by senior middle hitter Kelli
Canada (Midlothian, VA/James River). However, this is as
close as the Shorewomen would come as the guests scored six of the
final nine points of the evening to chalk up the victory. A kill by
Alex Min-Tun clinched the win for Catholic.
In addition to Jean, four other Catholic players
had double-digit dig totals. Kristina Purcell had
22 digs, while Michaela Carroll, Katie
Chefalas and Gabrielle Dipasquantonio
each totaled 12 digs. Carroll handed out a match-best 45 assists to
tally a double-double, while Kim Ray recorded 12
kills for the Cardinals on the night.
Washington got a double-double from Forget as she
had 12 digs and team-best 11 kills for her third double-double in
the last four matches. Freshman libero Kaitlin Rowan
(Damascus, MD/Damascus) led all Shorewomen players with 23
digs and junior defensive specialist Traci Daelemans
(Tracys Landing, MD/Southern) was the third WC player to
net double-digit dig totals with 10. Ward had a team-high 36
assists for Washington on the evening.
Canada had nine kills, including her 500th career
kill in the second set that cut Catholic's lead to 18-17. She now
has 503 kills in her career at Washington.
The Shorewomen will travel to Mary Washington on
Saturday with first serve at noon.
