HAVERFORD, PA – Host Haverford College downed visiting
Washington College, 3-0, (25-14, 25-12, 25-12) on Tuesday night at
Gooding Arena in Centennial Conference volleyball action. The
Fords are now 13-12 on the season and 6-0 in conference play, while
the Shorewomen fall to 10-17 and 2-5 respectively.
In the first set, Washington jumped out to a 4-3 lead following
an attack error by Haverford. But the Fords rolled off seven
straight points to take a 10-4 lead on an attack error by the
Shorewomen. WC would go on a 6-2 run of its own to cut the
Haverford lead to 12-10 on an attack error by the hosts. The
Fords countered with a set closing 13-4 spurt of their own to take
the opening set by a 25-14 count. Haverford clinched the set
on a Washington attack miscue.
The Shorewomen took a 3-2 lead early in the second set before
the Fords went on a 9-1 lead to grab an 11-4 lead on a
Caitlyn Tranquillo service ace. Washington
cut it to 12-7 on a kill by junior outsider hitter Alyssa
Forget (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley), but Haverford
score 13 of the final 18 points in the set to take the set
25-12.
In the third and final set, the Fords led 5-4 before going on a
9-1 run to grab a 14-5 lead on an attack error by the
Shorewomen. WC would win the next four points to trim the
Haverford lead to 14-9 on a kill by freshman middle hitter
Madeline Myers (Brant Beach, NJ/Southern
Regional). Haverford closed out the set and the
match on an 11-3 run to win the final set, 25-12. A kill by
Kelsey Cantwell ended the contest.
Cantwell led all players with 10 kills in the match for the
Fords, while Jenine Abbassi had nine kills and hit
a match-high .529. Kate Comey dished out 28
assists to lead all players, while Tranquillo had a team-topping 12
digs. Haverford had 15 service aces and totaled six
blocks. The Fords hit .273 as a team in the win.
For the Shorewomen, sophomore defensive specialist Rita
Rivera (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) had 13
digs to lead all players, while freshman setter Lauren
White (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown) handed out 16
assists.
Washington returns to competition on Saturday when they travel
to McDaniel for a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match in
Westminster, MD.
