Washington Opens Spring with Win Over
Division II Team
LEWES, DE -- The Washington College women's tennis
team won its dual match season opener, 7-2, against Division II
West Chester this afternoon at the Dave Marshall Tennis Center in
Lewes, DE. The Golden Rams dropped to 8-3 with the loss.
The Shorewomen scored the first point of the match
when senior Kellie Foster (Lothian, MD/St. Mary's)
and freshman Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's
School) completed an 8-2 win over Allie
Melhem and Stephanie Ritchey at No. 3
doubles. West Chester evened the scored with an 8-3 win by
Luisian Souto and Kara Shumock at
No. 2 over freshman Kat Cohen (Springfield,
MA/Williston-Northampton School) and junior
Kristine Depew (Downingtown, PA/Westtown School).
The Shorewomen took a 2-1 lead when sophomore Jordan
Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and sophomore
Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep,
MD) completed an 8-1 win over Brittany
Counts and Alison Fetter at No. 2.
Finnegan opened singles with a 6-2, 6-1, victory
over Counts at No. 1. The Shorewomen clinched the match when No. 2
and No. 3 singles finished within seconds of each other as Marshall
beat Souto, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 and Foster rallied to beat Fetter,
3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9), at No. 3. Claire
Afrassiabian picked up West Chester's second point with a
6-1, 6-0, victory over Depew at No. 4. Cohen then downed Melhem,
6-1, 6-1, at No. 6 and McNicol blanked Shumock, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5
to close out the match.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with
another match at Plantations as they take on Moravian at 1:00 p.m.
