McNicol, Foster Win in Singles and
Doubles
HAVERFORD, PA -- Host Haverford College rallied
from a 4-2 deficit by winning three singles matches in three sets
to post a 5-4 Centennial Conference women's tennis victory over
visiting Washington College this afternoon in Haverford, PA. The
Fords, ranked 11th in the Atlantic South region, improved to 4-3
overall and 3-0 in conference play with the win, while the
Shorewomen, ranked ninth in the region, fell to 6-2 and 2-1 with
the loss.
Washington held a 2-1 lead after doubles. Sophomore
Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy)
and sophomore Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester
Prep, MD) gave the Shorewomen the first point of the match
with an 8-2 win over Katie Wettick and
Jaclyn Porter at No. 1. Haverford evened the score
with a win at No. 3 as Katie Drooyan and
Sarah Gibson downed freshman Kat Cohen
(Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and
freshman Victoria Peel-Margraf (Montauk, NY/East
Hampton), 8-4. Senior Kellie Foster (Lothian,
MD/St. Mary's) and freshman Campbell McNicol (Mill
Neck, NY/St. George's School) put the Shorewomen in front
with an 8-4 win against Helen Fisun and
Fumiko Shogase at No. 2.
Washington extended the lead to 3-1 when McNicol
downed Drooyan, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 4 singles. Gibson trimmed the
margin to 3-2 with a 6-4, 6-2, win over Peel-Margraf at No. 6, but
the Shorewomen netted their fourth point of the match with Foster's
7-6(2), 6-0, victory over Porter at No. 3. The Fords made it 4-3
with Shogase's 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, victory over Cohen and evened the
score at 4-4 when Wettick completed a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, victory over
Finnegan at No. 1. Haverford won the match when Fisun finished a
7-6(7), 2-6, 6-3, win against Marshall at No. 2.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a
1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Franklin & Marshall.
