Washington Beats Muhlenberg, York
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's
tennis team won a pair of home matches today at Schottland Tennis
Center. The Shorewomen (9-3, 4-2 Centennial) opened the day with a
7-2 Centennial Conference win over Muhlenberg and finished the
afternoon with an 8-1 non-conference win over York (PA).
In doubles against Muhlenberg, WC sophomore
Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy)
and sophomore Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester
Prep, MD) beat Caitie Drucker and
Sara Sutker, 8-4, at No. 1 and freshman
Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton
School) and freshman Kelsey Mills (Cambridge,
MD/Cambridge-South Dorchester) won, 8-6, at No. 3 against
Amanda von Taube and Lauren
Bennett. Senior Kellie Foster (Lothian, MD/St.
Mary's) and freshman Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck,
NY/St. George's School) completed the doubles sweep for
the Shorewomen with a 9-8(5) victory against Lindsay
Schmidt and Danielle Winston at No. 2.
Foster and McNicol rallied from a 5-2 deficit to win at No. 3.
Finnegan downed Drucker, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles
against the Mules. Marshall clinched the match for the Shorewomen
with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, win over Sutker at No. 2. The Mules got their
first point of the match when Winston topped Foster, 6-1, 2-6, 0-6,
at No. 3 and their second point when Deniz Uziel
downed Mills, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6. Cohen added a 6-0, 2-6, 10-7,
victory against von Taube at No. 5, while McNicol downed Schmidt,
7-5, 6-0, at No. 4 to provide the final margin.
Washington cruised to a 3-0 lead against York by
sweeping doubles. Finnegan and Marshall beat Samantha
Brenner and Megan McCullin, 8-0, at No.
1, Foster and McNicol downed Katelyn Acker and
Sarah Walsh, 8-1, at No. 2, and Cohen and Mills
tripped up Samantha Hunt and Maria
McFaulds, 8-2, at No. 3.
Marshall opened singles with a 6-0, 6-0, blanking
of Brenner at No. 2. Foster won by the same score over McCullin at
No. 3 to clinch the match for Washington. McNicol also won by
shutout at No. 4 against McFaulds, while Finnegan was a 6-1, 6-1,
winner against Acker at No. 1. Cohen beat Nelson, 8-2, at No. 5 for
the Shorewomen's final point. Walsh downed Mills, 8-5, at No. 6 to
account for the Spartans' lone point.
The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 3:30
p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Ursinus.
