WESTMINSTER, MD -- Host McDaniel College raced out
to a 9-1 lead en route to an 18-12 Centennial Conference women's
lacrosse victory over visiting Washington College this afternoon in
Westminster, MD. The Green Terror improved to 8-5 overall and 2-4
in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to
6-5 and 2-4 with the loss.
Kelley Scheler gave the Green
Terror a quick one-goal lead with a tally 1:32 into the game.
Brittany Baer made it 2-0 with a goal off a feed
from Sarah Mintz with 25:46 to go in the first
half. Mintz gave McDaniel a 3-0 lead with a goal off a Scheler
assist at 22:53. The Shorewomen got on the board with 19:56 to go
in the half when freshman attacker Corinne Ziccardi
(Baltimore, MD/Loch Raven) scored off a feed from junior
midfielder Sam Ohrem (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield).
Baer made it 4-1 12 seconds later, however, and Paige
Messersmith upped the margin to 5-1 15 seconds after
that.
The Green Terror ran off four more goals to make it
9-1 before Ziccardi scored Washington's second goal on a
free-position shot with 12:52 left. WC senior midfielder
Allie Hanzsche (Catonsville, MD/Mount de Sales)
then scored off an assist from freshman midfielder Marissa Restaino (Media, PA/Penncrest) with 10:44 left before
halftime and freshman midfielder Mollie Shipley (Denville,
NJ/Morris Catholic) scored off an Ohrem assist with 7:24
to go to trim the margin to 9-4. WC sophomore attacker
Kalli Parrish (Timonium, MD/McDonogh School) cut
the lead to 9-5 with a goal with 2:51 left in the half before the
Green Terror stopped the Shorewomen's run with a goal by Baer off a
Mintz assist with 2:13 remaining. McDaniel took the 9-5 lead into
the intermission.
Washington pulled back to within four goals by
striking first in the second half as Shipley netted a goal 46
seconds into the period. Mintz countered with a goal with 23:39
remaining to give McDaniel an 11-6 lead. Chelsea
Watkins followed with a goal off an assist from
Emma Ardolino with 22:44 to play and then assisted
on a goal by Brittany Lines with 22:12 to go to
push the advantage to 13-6. A free-position goal by Parrish with
19:03 left and a goal by Ohrem with 18:29 remaining cut the lead to
13-8, but Lines scored a free-position goal with 18:07 to go and
Scheler scored with 17:00 remaining to push the lead back to seven
goals. A goal by Baer with 14:23 left made the score 16-8 in favor
of McDaniel. Messersmith upped the lead to 17-8 with 14:09 to play
and Alison Rose made it 18-8 with a goal with
19:14 remaining. In the final 10 minutes, WC sophomore midfielder
Rachel Bartee (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll)
scored off an assist from junior attacker Sarah Cannon
(Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep), Shipley scored a free
position goal, Parrish scored an unassisted tally, and Ohrem scored
a free-position goal to provide the final margin.
Baer scored six goals to lead the Green Terror with
five coming in the first half. Mintz had three goals and four
assists, while Lines finished with three goals and one assist.
Shipley and Parrish each scored three times for the Shorewomen,
while Ohrem had two goals and two assists.
McDaniel held a 45-27 advantage in shots in the
game.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a
1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Franklin &
Marshall.
