Finnegan & Marshall Win at No. 1
Doubles
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Swarthmore College
downed host Washington College, 7-2, in a Centennial Conference
women's tennis match this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center.
The Garnet, who are ranked 13th in the Atlantic South region,
improved to 7-3 overall and 5-0 in conference matches with the win,
while the Shorewomen, who are ranked ninth, fell to 7-3 and 3-2
with the loss.
Kelsey Johnson and Luann
Cignavitch opened doubles with an 8-1 win for the Garnet
over freshman Kat Cohen (Springfield,
MA/Williston-Northampton School) and freshman
Kelsey Mills (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge-South
Dorchester) at No. 3. Stephanie Chia and
Rosie DuBrin gave Swarthmore a 2-0 lead with an
8-6 victory over senior Kellie Foster (Lothian, MD/St.
Mary's) and freshman Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck,
NY/St. George's School) at No. 2 before WC got on the
board as sophomore Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere
Academy) and sophomore Brittany Marshall
(Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep, MD) posted an 8-6 win
against Rachel Wallwork and Emily
Rosenblum at No. 1. Finnegan and Marshall are currently
ranked 10th in the region in doubles, while Wallwork and Rosenblum
are ranked ninth.
Chia opened singles with a 6-0, 6-0, victory over
Mills at No. 6 to give Swarthmore a 3-1 advantage. Wallwork, the
region's fifth-ranked singles player, then bested Finnegan, 6-0,
6-2, at No. 1 to make it 4-1. Cohen got the Shoremen's second point
with a 6-4, 6-4, victory against Alexis Hickman at
No. 5, but Johnson clinched the match for the Garnet with a 7-6(7),
6-4, victory against McNicol at No. 4. Rosenblum added a 6-4, 6-2,
victory against Foster at No. 3, while DuBrin beat Marshall, 2-6,
6-4, 10-7, at No. 2 to account for the final margin .
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a
12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Muhlenberg and
a 4:00 p.m. non-conference home match against York (PA).
