Freshman Forward Scores Both WC Goals 

 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Freshman forward Sam Wild (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West) scored both of the home team's goals as host Washington College defeated visiting Widener University, 2-1, in a non-conference men's soccer game tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.

The Shoremen (3-4) scored on their first shot of the game, off the first corner kick of the game.  Senior midfielder Gavin Rayburn (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) sent a corner kick into the box which Wild played off his chest and into the goal at 6:52. Washington junior goalkeeper Chris Phipps (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) made seven saves in the first half as the Shoremen took the 1-0 lead into intermission. 

Wild gave Washington a 2-0 lead at the 49:31 mark when he gathered a ball in the box and blasted it into the lower-left of the goal. Widener (4-4-1) got on the board at 80:54 when Derek Brubaker headed in a clearing attempt that went off the crossbar and moved back out in front of the goal. The Pride nearly evened the score at 2-2 but WC sophomore midfielder/defender Tim Marcin (Wilmington, DE/Concord) raced downfield to play a ball off the line on a shot by Gareth Cooper at 86:53. 

Widener held a 24-6 advantage in shots in the game, but a 13-save performance by Phipps helped the Shoremen come away with the win. 

Washington matched its win total from all of last season with tonight's victory. 

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 6:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Franklin & Marshall.
