Shorewomen Drop Only Five Games in Match
DANVILLE, VA -- The Washington College women's tennis team opened its dual match season with a 9-0 blanking of host Averett University this afternoon in Danville, VA. Averett fell to 1-2 with the loss.
The Shorewomen won all three doubles matches by 8-0 finals. Juniors Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep [MD]), ranked eighth in the Atlantic South region in doubles, beat Ilona Kilpi and Nadja Sandau at No. 1, freshman Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, NJ/Bergen Tech) and sophomore Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) defeated Kristin Butts and Erika Weyner at No. 2, and sophomore Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and freshman Bethany Daller (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) beat Annika Rindestedt and Sandra Johansson at No. 3.
Washington lost just five games in singles. Marshall rolled to a 6-0, 6-1, win over Johanna Heikkinen at No. 1, while Finnegan blanked Kilpi, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2. Bercovici, ranked 12th in the region in singles, beat Butts, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3. McNicol beat Sandau and Cohen beat Weyner by identical 6-0, 6-0, finals at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Daller downed Rindestedt, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6.
The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with a 2:00 p.m. match at Guilford.
