4-0 Start is Program Best Since Inaugural 5-0 Campaign in 1975
NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- The Washington College women's tennis team ran its record to 4-0 on the season, all by shut out, with a 9-0 victory over host Christopher Newport this afternoon in Newport News, VA. The 4-0 start is the program's best since it won all five of its matches in its inaugural varsity season of 1975.
Juniors Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep [MD]), ranked eighth in the region in doubles, rallied for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles over Sarah Stafford and Marion Gloor. Freshman Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, NJ/Bergen Tech) and sophomore Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) defeated Kim Morrisett and Morgan Huff, 8-4, at No. 2, while sophomore Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and freshman Bethany Daller (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) topped Melisande Downs and Jodi Noland, 8-3, at No. 3.
In singles, Bercovici, the region's 12th-ranked player, beat Stafford, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 1, Finnegan downed Morrisett, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2, and Marshall bested Huff, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3. In the bottom half of the line-up, McNicol topped Gllor, 6-1, 7-5, Cohen beat Noland, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, and Daller defeated Lauren Kelly, 6-0, 6-1.
The Shorewomen return to action Sunday with their Centennial Conference opener, a 1:00 p.m. match at Dickinson.
