Box Score Ziccardi With Career-Best Five Points In Victory
CHESTERTOWN, MD – Sophomore attacker Corinne Ziccardi (Baltimore, MD/Loch Raven) had a career-best four goals, and one assist, for a personal-best five points, including the game-winning goal, as host Washington College topped visiting St. Mary's (MD), 12-10, on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Kibler Field at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium. The Shorewomen improve to 2-0 overall, while the Seahawks fall to 2-2.
The win is Washington's first over St. Mary's (MD) since a 10-8 win during the 2000 season and also snaps a five-game losing streak to the Seahawks.
The Shorewomen scored the first three goals in the opening 9:17 of the game that was capped on a free position goal by junior midfielder Rachel Bartee (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll). The Shorewomen pushed the lead to 5-1 with 18:06 to go in the first half on a Ziccardi goal on a pass from sophomore midfielder Marissa Restaino (Media, PA/Penncrest). Washington took a 7-3 lead with 39 seconds left in the half on a goal by sophomore midfielder Mollie Shipley (Denville, NJ/Morris Catholic). The Seahawks would score with no time left on the clock on a free position tally by Lauren Bennett to cut the lead to 7-4 at halftime.
The Seahawks scored four of the first five goals of the second half to level the score at 8-8 on a goal by Emily Shafer with 21:16 to go in the game. Washington would get the next two goals, both by senior attacker Sarah Cannon (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame Prep) to grab a 10-8 lead with 16:59 to go in the contest. St. Mary's (MD) would cut the lead to 10-9 with 15:09 to go on Shafer's third goal of the contest. Ziccardi's fourth goal of the game would extend the lead back to two goals at 11-9 with 9:56 to go. Junior attacker Kalli Parrish (Timonium, MD/McDonogh School) scored with 8:36 remaining to give Washington a three-goal cushion at 12-9. Lauriann Parker scored from Aubrey Mirkin with 3:56 left to cut the WC lead to 12-10 and round out the scoring.
For Washington, Cannon had four points on three goals and one assist, while Shipley had two goals and one helper for three points. Freshman attack Carly Eisenbrandt (Baltimore, MD/Towson), Parrish and Bartee had one goal each. Freshman defender/midfielder Kathleen Maleski (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) and Restaino each tallied one assist, with Maleski recording her first collegiate assist and point. In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Seibert (Clear Spring, MD/Mercersburg Academy (PA) had a career-high 12 saves.
For St. Mary's (MD), Parker and Shafer had three goals, while Lauren Bennett totaled two goals. Mirkin lead all players with three assists for the Seahawks. In net, Colleen Simpson turned away 10 shots.
The Seahawks outshot the Shorewomen, 31-26, and won 15 of the game's 23 draw controls. Washington held a 17-13 edge in ground balls, while clearing the ball successfully 13-of-17 times. St. Mary's (MD) was good on 10 of its 15 clear attempts. Each side scored once on the free position.
The Shorewomen return on Saturday afternoon with a 3:00 p.m. non-conference contest with visiting Rowan.
