Washington Downs Ursinus, 8-1
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's tennis team improved to 6-0 for the first time in the 37-season history of the program with an 8-1 Centennial Conference win over visiting Ursinus College this afternoon inside the Johnson Fitness Center. The Shorewomen also improved to 2-0 in conference play, while Ursinus fell to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
Juniors Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep [MD]), the region's seventh-ranked doubles team, blanked Julia Kurtz and Jessica Tyrrell, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and freshman Bethany Daller (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) were 8-3 winners over Heather McMasters and Jimena Talavera at No. 2 and freshman Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, NJ/Bergen Tech) and sophomore Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) topped Mara Berzins and Dana McDonough, 8-2, at No. 3 as the Shorewomen swept doubles play.
Bercovici led off singles with a 6-0, 6-0, blanking of Talavera at No. 3. Finnegan clinched the win for Washington by winning at an identical score over Kurtz at No. 1. McNicol added a 6-2, 6-1, win over Tyrrell at No. 4, while Marshall, ranked 12th in the region in singles, handled Berzins, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2. Daller posted an 8-0 pro-set win against McDonough at No. 6. The Bears' lone point came at No. 5, where Caroline Lippe bested Cohen, 8-4.
Washington won all five of its matches in its inaugural varsity season of 1975, its previous best-ever start to a season.
The Shorewomen, who are ranked 14th as a team in the region, return to action Saturday with a pair of road matches - a 12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Franklin & Marshall and a 4:00 p.m. non-conference match at York (PA).
