Shorewomen Extend Program-Best Start to 8-0
YORK, PA -- The Washington College women's tennis team extended its best-ever start to a season by winning a pair of matches by identical 9-0 finals today at the Wisehaven Swim and Tennis Club in York, PA. The Shorewomen opened the day by improving to 3-0 in Centennial Conference matches with a 9-0 blanking of Franklin & Marshall. Washington then shut out York (PA) College, 9-0, in a non-conference match.
Against F&M, juniors Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep [MD]), who are ranked seventh in the Atlantic South region in doubles, posted an 8-6 win over Anya Sahaydachny at No. 1 doubles. Freshman Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, NJ/Bergen Tech) and sophomore Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) were 8-2 winners over Valeri Harteg and Shannon Littlefield at No. 2, while sophomore Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and freshman Bethany Daller (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) bested Chelsea Bush and Meryl Schulman, by an identical score at No. 3.
In singles play, Marshall, ranked 15th in the region, blanked Sahaydachny, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1. Finnegan, Bercovici, and McNicol faced only slightly more resistance at the next three spots as Finnegan was a 6-0, 6-1, winner over Harteg at No. 2, Bercovici beat Weiner, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3, and McNicol rolled past Littlefield, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4. Cohen handled Victoria Lussier, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5, while Daller blanked Katherine Sutton, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.
Against York, Finnegan and Marshall beat Katelyn Acker and Sarah Wargo, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles , while Bercovici and McNicol downed Samantha Brenner and Megan McCullin, 8-2, at No. 2 and Cohen and Daller defeated Nicole Olson and Joelle Stasak, 8-2, at No. 3.
In singles, Marshall downed Wargo, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1, Bercovici beat Acker, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2, and Finnegan blanked Brenner, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3. McNicol added a 6-1, 6-1, win against McCullin at No. 4, while Cohen bested Arcondia Vlahos, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 and Daller shut out Stephanie Nelson, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.
The Shorewomen, who are currently ranked 14th in the Atlantic South region, return to action Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Swarthmore.
